What If?: Metroid on N64

Post by racketboy »

What do you think it would have been like if Nintendo released a Metroid game on the N64?
Would it have been a 2D or 3D game?
Do you think they could have pulled off a good 3D Metroid on the N64?

I would have preferred 2D, but they would have done 3D and we all know it.

Most likely a very zeldaish control and look..im not sure they would have attempted a 1st person shooter like the later ones unless rare did the graphics and nintendo did the story..hmm that would have been pretty cool actually :D

I have actually thought about this quite a bit. It would have been done by Rare as they were Nintendo's go to guys for their big franchises at that time. It probably would have been very similar to Jet Force Gemini in that it would have been a 3rd Person adventure, though used the Zelda engine, which itself is an upgrade to the Mario 64 engine. It would have been no where near as impressive as the Prime releases, but would have been better than nothing. I think it would have been looked back on now as a weak point in the Metroid series. The reason that Prime was so amazing was that it captured that sense of isolation in a stange world that was present in the 2D adventures and succesfull transfered that to a stunning 3D environment. I think that the N64 graphics would not have been able to translate that feeling as well as the GCs.

It probably would have been a lot like Turok since that was a big hit back then.

I think I remember reading that Nintendo actually went to Retro Studios about a 3D, third-person Metroid for the N64.

It would have been awesome if they had done a 2.5D game like paper mario. It would definately add a totally new element to metroid gameplay!

Ok, I'll do it... Metroid Prime Hunters... not nearly as good as a 2D inspired Metroid, but the graphics would be very similar.

I could have sworn I saw a beta somewhere. I might have made this up but I think I read somewhere that it was going to be the same as how it was on the gamecube but in third person.

I don't know why I'm in the Nintendo board, but anyway...here's a collection of rumors about the game during the late 90s.
