Although in my childhood there was a knockoff candy with block shapes that came in a bucket.

i found a lego spongebob set at a goodwill for 3.00 it took me 3 weeks to put it together

I just read through this entire topic... awesome nostalgia blast for me. I was nuts about legos between the ages of about 6 to 12. Every birthday and Christmas I'd ask my parents for a Lego set. The most memorable was the huge "Aqua Raiders" base with this massive green underwater dome and a prison to store your captives. I can't find any pics online but here was a related set I also got as a kid:

I was also really into the Lego video games they made in the late nineties. My Dad stipulated that if I got good grades he'd buy Lego Island for me. I got all A's and he took me to K-mart and got it. I spent hours playing it, mesmerized.



I also enjoyed Rock Raiders although the PC I had to play it with was underpowered and ran really slow.



As a preteen I got obsessed with Bionicle and almost literally got every set up until the revised versions of the Bahrak (I can't remember what they're called, it's been a while.) Some of those sets were amazing. Mechanically they were actually really intricate, with all these springs and levels and well-thought out contraptions to make them bite and punch and flap and whatnot. To this day I still have a Toa Lewa sitting on top of my shelf above my PC.

All the Lego's my parents got me are still stored away in tubs. I pretty much still have all of them - a pretty massive accumulation. If I ever have kids I'm gonna pass them down so I can constantly step on tiny plastic pieces throughout the house (lol).

My Bionicle collection is rather large too. I liked how they doubled as action figures. It's pretty much all packed away now. I used to have them all put together and on display.

I even got the Toa of Light and Makuta sets.
