I think we're missing the real subject at hand.

There isn't much to discuss. Extremely niche genre. Found home on 360. Fans of genre buy 360. Done.

Why would they port their games to the PS3 when their extremely small but dedicated fan base already bought 360s? The games do not have mass appeal so there is no need. The next DoDonPachi game is not going to sell millions or even hundreds of thousands of copies if it is released on the PS3.

I just find this hard to believe. More systems = larger audience. Aren't Cave games on ipods/phones now? Aren't those ports a testament to the growing market?

If these titles are really part as niche a market as you guys believe, a single purchase does show support. I can't afford to purchase 1,000 units but I'll do what I can; even if it means just buying one copy upon release.

Hi guys ive been a lurker for awhile, some of you will know me from the shmups forum :)

As others have said most ppl who are serious about buying shmups have already gone out and bought a 360, especially when the price of the console is so low. Imo most ppl who havnt done so dont have shmups high on their priotities or atleast not enough to buy the more that the occasional shooter which isnt enough to support the genre by buying every game at full rrp, those who do are on the 360. (Maybe one or two AAA shmups like Ikaruga or Deathsmiles could make a profit but no more)

That said I do think there is a good case for PC ports on steam. As unlike the PS3 the PC does have a a decent number of shmup players who are quite happy playing Mame and doujins games to be bothered buying a 360. However since most PC gamers pirate its still unknown if its worth CAVE and Grev porting their games onto the platform.

Although Jamestown seems to be a success and theres a bevy of doujin shmups making their way to steam there is a market there. Ive just a funny feeling that this sudden rush will saturate the market similar to how the 360 market was last year.

One common misconception from gamers thats common (ive kind of seen it in this thread too) is that CAVE is gouging or charging overly high prices for their games when it isnt true. The price of their shmups in Japan is std to other retail shooters and the prices of their localised 360 shmups are quite cheap been around £25 rrp that quicky drops to half that.

Although some might say that £25 is too much when similar shmups are on xbla but the fact is the best sellers are rereleases of older games. The others are a mix of hybrid or lower quality shooters leaving Strania (which IIRC Grev wasnt happy with its sales) and Trouble Witches Neo (a doujin fan game that made it big). Also MS are shitheads at marketing niche xbla games on their dashboard other than Treasure, Fez and Limbo

That's not totally true. Sure it won't sell hundreds of thousands.. But look at other somewhat Niche genres.. If you look at the charts poverty games of the type usually 4 to 5 times more on the ps3 than the 360.. You have a better chance making an example of an FPS title than you do a SHMUP or other niche genre of game, because PS3 outsells the 360 in that category regardless..

Although if MS has put a stop to regoin free then that could work in the PS3s favor as shmup fans who dont have a j360 can buy the PS3 version like HD defeat.

Plus if the game is region locked on the 360 does mean that there a chance it'll be localised for the west or come to GOD later. So far none of the RF titles has had a western release, even though they are the best titles of this generation imo

Exactly. We can see this with other genres like Phantom Breaker getting a Western release too. I really think being region-locked has benefitted the 360 in Japan.

Region-locking is a good indicator of multi-region releases? I... don't understand the logic behind this.
