PS3/JRPG- 360/Shmups. It's checks and balances I guess.

Because most of those people are JRPG fans and PS3 >>> 360 in terms of available titles..
We've been over this... Such was not always the case. I certainly remember the buzz for Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, The Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery and (to a lesser extent) Tales of Vesperia long before the PS3 had anything to show. The tables have turned now, but 6 years ago it was a different story.

But these games are more widely available to "the public" now. I obviously don't have anything to back this up (I guess only people at Aksys, Rising Star etc. really know), but I really doubt games like Dodonpachi, Deathsmiles, Akai Katana would have been brought over to the West if they were on the PS3. Everyone who cared would have just imported them, and is Joe Schmo from Idaho who's never played an STG before really gonna be willing to pay $80 to import a game he might get bored of in twenty minutes?

good call, Captain Obvious! I'm guessing it was only kids that had Sega Master System that complained about Zelda being a NES exclusive too. :P

ANYWAY, the intention of this thread was not a PS3 vs 360 argument...

And after all, Cave releases are only about 20 minutes long and have unlimited continues. Most people will use 20 credits for one loop and say "OKAY I BEAT IT". And then "why did I pay so much for this game that should be $5?"

But then again, I'm sure at least a FEW people have bought shmups not knowing what they are getting into and maybe become a fan of the genre and work on understanding it.

I may be way off base, but I think it's harder for American audiences to really connect with shoot em ups these days. There aren't many arcades in the US. We don't have that arcade culture Japan has. And a vast majority of the ones that are still around just have Crusin' USA and a few other games from that era. Newer audiences have NEVER played a shmup. Not even something like Space Invaders.

As much as I love physical releases, I do not think they are profitable for shmup releases in the US. They're likely barely profitable in Japan.

It was inevitable, unfortunately.

yeah I knew that going in. Was just hoping for the best. Though there have been some good on-topic responses.

I guess all we can do is buy Under Defeat and support the genre's representation on the PS3 as best we can.
