If you made a virtual PS2 mem card, would that work with PS1 games and just have more space?

No. Even on a PS2 you can only copy saves from a PS1 card to a PS2 one for safekeeping, but PS1 games can only read and write to PS1 cards.

Yup. This just happened to me tonight, right after passing a damn license test in Gran Turismo! I went to save and it said there was no space left on the virtual memory card. Then I couldn't find a way to create a new one while remaining in-game. So I was forced to exit game (without saving) and go to the XMB to create a new card. Lame

yeah that sucks. That's definitely an oversight in the system that should be fixed. You should be able to create a new one in-game.

It's a callback to when you were 10 and your parents weren't about to drive to Toys-R-Us and get you a new memory card.

They could not do that without destroying the emulation process. PS3 doesn't just run software emulation of PS1 games, it has a PS1 inside the system. Given that the actual PS1 hardware is inside they had to play by the hardware's rules, so we all have to deal with tiny '8-meg' memory cards.

This reminds me of a friend down the street who got a PSX and Final Fantasy VII for Christmas back in '97 or '98. His parents did not know what a memory card was (since his Nintendo did not need one, why would they?) and he got so caught up in the game that he had to let the PSX run until he could save enough money to buy a memory card...

...three weeks later.

It was so much fun to joke with him that the clouds on the horizon were going to become the storm that knocked the power out.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
