Re: Need to be Brought up to Speed / Modern Gaming
Yeah, because Mass Effect is a FIRST person shooter >_>
Anyways, on topic, I'd get either a PS3 *or* a 360. It's not like Generation 4 where most games were console exclusives, all the good ones are multiplatform. There's about five good series per console that refuse to go to the other, but that's about it.

Has anyone noted the irony of the site this question is being asked on?

Re: Need to be Brought up to Speed / Modern Gaming
All 3 consoles are great. I primarily play PS1 and PSP games but they all have something to offer. That said, X360 doesn't have much to offer that's not better on PS3 or Wii - except the shmups. If you like shmups it's a great console.
Wii has a lot of "real" games on it. I prefer buttons too but some have really good motion controls and some have none at all. Those are the ones to go for. Aiming in Metroid Prime 3 is great for example. Skyward Sword has good controls, and it's worth playing even if you don't think it's up to modern standards. Okami is good either way. It would let you catch up on Cube games you missed too, and there are a lot of good ones. Retro compilations will make rare/old school games cheaper. Also: the RPGs. There are very few, but they're awesome. Fire Emblem and, in April, XENOBLADE. Which is probably worth the price of a Wii. New Donkey Kong rocks too.
PS3 has a lot of crap and if you don't like new-school game design you won't like inFamous, Uncharted, or the tons of similar games. But the racing games are excellent, the sports games are great (if you're into it, I'm not really), the 2D fighters are must-have. SFIV, Tekken 6 and BlazBlue will make any fighter fan very, very happy. And these are all multiplats. Gotta remember Gran Turismo and the others. There are also some great RPGs new and old, Japanese and Western both. Lower amount, but some good ones. Valkyria Chronicles, Ni No Kuni, and White Knight Chronicles II are cool exclusives. Multiplat RPGs like Disgaea, Vandal Hearts, and others are good too. Western RPGs are more obvious - Elder Scrolls, Amalur, Mass Effect/Fallout/Whatever. Ultimate Genesis Collection is the single best deal in gaming history.
But, if you're getting a new console and don't need current gen, get a PS2. Best console in my book. The variety and quality is unmatched even though there's a lot of shovelware.
As for handhelds: PSP rocks. Its games are the cheapest right now - many cheaper than NES games. The console-style games at the beginning of its life were sloppy and lame but now it has a ton of awesome old-school games and cool takes on new ones - Ace Combat X, Ridge Racer, Wipeout Pure/pluse Outrun 2006, Guilty Gear and BlazBlue once again. Retro compilations once again (must have Gradius Collection). And if you're a fan, a ton of really high quality JRPGs. Most of them are PS1 as far as structure and style goes, but with gorgeous 2D or decent 3D with cutscenes by Production IG and everything. Originals like Jeanne D'Arc, Tactics Ogre, Hexyz Force and Ys 7 are lots of fun. There are upgraded remakes like Lunar Silver Star and older Ys games, and straight ports like Valkyrie Profile and FF Tactics. I'm a big PSP fan.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Mass Effect series
Fallout 3
Portal and Portal 2
Half Life 2
These should give you a good sense of some of the best FPS modern gaming has to offer that feel like an advancement in gaming history.
*fixed
also, ug FPS...
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is not a traditional FPS as it has 3rd person elements and focuses on stealth and hacking.
Mass Effect is not an FPS.
Fallout 3 is an FPS, but can be played in 3rd person mode, plus the shooting can be done in a turn-based style using the VATS system.
Portal and Portal 2 are in the first person, but are not shooters.
Half Life 2 is the only pure FPS on the list.

Re: Need to be Brought up to Speed / Modern Gaming
Is it just me? Or has the PS3 become the Sega Saturn of it's generation? Just with a better sales department.
It just seems to be having the same things said about it that we now generally say about the Saturn. Great exclusive titles with some really originally game ideas. But all the multi-platform games look better on the competition because the PS3 has hardware that is rapidly gaining a reputation as "difficult to program for".
Plus I have noticed a big age difference online. Everyone I meet on the Xbox Live seems to be under 21 and no offense there seems to be a lot more maturity issues. Whereas the PSN seems to be the older crowd of gamers who have been around awhile now.
Just my two cents...

Does that mean it can get killed off early and a new best console ever can be made?

I see what your saying with the Saturn comparison, makes sense.
The way I see it, I would suggest getting a 360 and PS3. 360 has great shmups, some exclusive shooters (if your into that), Deadly Premonition, and some noteworthy games are better on 360. (Most Bethesda games, Bayonneta, I've heard Sonic Generations)
PS3 is better overall for single player that isn't shmups or "better on 360" games. inFamous series, Resistance and a couple other shooters, Ratchet and Clank, 3D.Heroes, and others, along with the fact that some models are backwards compatable, giving you PS2 and PS1 libraries too.
Meh, I hate "which is better" arguments. Just get the fuck along...

FYI -- PS3 has Deadly Premonition too. Just it's called Red Seeds Profile. I know several of us (besides myself) own this version here.

I know- but isn't it in Japanese? I wanted to play it safe and assume OP couldn't speak it...
