Need to be Brought up to Speed / Modern Gaming

Post by Radical Lanzar »

I've been under a rock for the last ten years, mostly taking care of life. This is what I'm current on:

The last console I followed with any enthusiasm was the Dreamcast. While I did have a Cube, I played it casually only - Metroid Prime and the Twin Snakes were the only hyped games I knew of. I'm familiar with the Master Chief and Halo craze. PS2 was the console with all the goodies.

I played a DS and followed the homebrew scene a bit, but ultimately lost interest and sold it when an R trigger failed. The DS seems to be in the shadow these days, despite being a ridiculously fun portable. I know nothing of the PSP save for it has a bunch of rereleased games or continues series ala the GBA, only in 3D.

The Wii was the Revolution. I don't know about the name, but it looks stupid. Despite this it seems to be winning.. I heard we haven't had any innovative Zelda games. PS3 is overpriced and seems to be 'that console' that everyone talks about. Is the X-Box 360 still around?

That all sounds about right to me. Then again, I've been mostly hanging out with the 90's systems. Wii is my most modern. Without the motion controls, it's just another GameCube without as many good games. I gotta say, Resident Evil 4 on the Wii was pretty great though.

Not sure there's much worth crawling out from under the rocks for ATM...

Personally, I hate motion controls, and that applies to the Wii, Move, iPhone/other smartphones and Kinect. I'd much rather just play the goddamn game; I don't need a gimmick if the game itself is good. In the case of the Wii, I much prefer the option to play without motion controls (TP is better on Gamecube, for instance) and it's not really working towards the console's favor that it only gets maybe 1-2 good games a year. Chicks love it though.

Xbox is full of shooters and multi-platform releases. Get it if you want to play online. The only really worthwhile exclusive (imo) is Deadly Premonition.

PS3 has a lot of great exclusives, as well as a lot of HD re-releases. Uncharted, Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, God of War LittleBigPlanet and Resistance are all worth checking out. If you have even a passing interest in racing (and I didn't think I did) Wipeout HD is incredible. Overall, I'd say the PS3 is my favorite console of this generation.

I kind of agree on the motion controls sabrage, but a shooter where you can actually aim at a target vs. using a joystick to move a reticle is an upgrade IMO.

1. Skyward Sword is pretty different, for better or worse. It's fun, but holds your hand a lot, is really linear, and they pretty much turned the overworld into giant dungeon extensions. Controls are also love-it-or-hate-it. Personally I love the controls, they work really well, and I don't normally like motion controls much.

2. You can get Ps3 bundles right now is $250 new. Given how much the library has grown now, I'd say that's a very reasonable price point.

3. 360 is still going strong, but most people here will probably tell you that the Ps3 and Wii both have stronger libraries.

Some other stuff you probably missed out on:

Final Fantasy XIII sucks ass. They're making a sequel for some unfathomable reason.

Sonic 06, The Secret Rings, Unleashed, The Black Knight, and Sonic 4 are all terrible. Shouldn't surprise you though. Sonic Generations, on the other hand, is excellent and a legitimately good return to form.

Bomberman: Act Zero deserves an award for most misguided attempt at rebranding a character ever.

Megaman Legends 3 was started and then swiftly killed.

Well, that's why I have a PC.

I got mine (160GB) with LittleBigPlanet 2 and the new Ratchet and Clank for $200 on Black Friday. I saw the 320GB model with Uncharted 3 for $150 a few weeks later. Exceedingly reasonable if you ask me.

Why not browse the forum you are posting on, or perhaps look online somewhere else or even make a venture to a store that sells video games?

You mean do research and form an opinion on the subject on your own? Preposterous. Clear yet another "MODERN GAMING" thread is in order.

Good answers, but is the 360 still around?
