Because the more of these damned unnecessary clients I have to download for every new digital service that comes along, the more spread apart my games are and the more harddrive space gets wasted.MrPopo wrote:Someone remind me why Origin is burdensome again?

Plus you can't opt out of Origin's data mining regime, but I have it running nonetheless I'm quite uninteresting

Any game that requires an online activation/constant connection to play/download/change options/eat/drink/sleep/whatever is just not right. I am constantly reminded of the Ubisoft/Silent Hunter 5 debacle:
From Wiki:
On March 7, 2010, at approximately 8pm GMT, Ubisoft's DRM servers for Silent Hunter 5 and Assassin's Creed II were taken offline and kept down for nearly 24 hours. Ubisoft claimed that this was a result of the number of users attempting to access their servers to play. As a result of this downtime, legitimate owners of both games were unable to log in and play them in any form. Ubisoft later released a statement claiming that hackers were attacking the DRM servers, retracting their previous claim. The servers were attacked again on March 9, with Ubisoft claiming on their Twitter page that they were attempting to repair the problem
I also find it funny that EA chooses to name their DRM after a famous developer that made some pretty awesome stuff for PCs in the 90s and that they swallowed up.

So... it's a minor inconvenience. Yes, I'd love to have everything on Steam too, but I don't see how this is worthy of any sort of real discussion.J T wrote:Because the more of these damned unnecessary clients I have to download for every new digital service that comes along, the more spread apart my games are and the more harddrive space gets wasted.MrPopo wrote:Someone remind me why Origin is burdensome again?

It's always worth discussing when developers deliberately make the retail product worse than the pirated version.

you guys don't honestly think that EA's decision to use Origin exclusively warrants piracy, do you?

My point exactly. Why don't we see these threads when game X uses Steam?dsheinem wrote:you guys don't honestly think that EA's decision to use Origin exclusively warrants piracy, do you?

Re: Mass Effect 3 requires Origin, ALL flavours
I don't normally pirate things. I have the PC CE preordered anyway. However, I'm certainly tempted to leave that in the shrink wrap and find an Origin-free version online.dsheinem wrote:you guys don't honestly think that EA's decision to use Origin exclusively warrants piracy, do you?
Because Steam is established and many of us already have an investment there. While digital distribution wouldn't be my ideal purchasing method, if I'm going to do it, I'll go with the service I've already got 160-odd games on. Not yet another random client. My point exactly. Battlefield 3, ME3, etc are not on Steam purely because EA doesn't want to give Valve a cut of the DLC/etc sales.
