My news feeds say that it's required for all versions, even retail. The same applies to Battlefield 3. Offline play requires the one-off activation, but for coop Origin has to be running all the time. Steam release being mulled etc.

Thats pretty crap.
I am happy that my save file from the first two is for the 360.

Sucks for people who played 1 and 2 on Steam. Will Steam-based saves carry over?

I dont see why not, you just have to find the save file location and point Mass Effect 3 to it.

Well, that sucks.
I'm in no rush to play it though. I still haven't finished the first Mass Effect and haven't even touched the second.
