I had to not only use the map, but actually plot out my route since you have to work with those warps to get around. Kind of study the map and figure out your route in little pieces. (Did you get the titular Axe yet?)

I beat it "quickly" as in 8 days. But it wasn't a quick game at all. I probably spent around four hours on it just yesterday. Though it only took me about a week, when I did play it was usually in long sittings. Trust me, even with maps and walkthrough tihs isn't an easy game. And really, I barely used a walkthrough. I printed maps, and I spent time making my own notes on each one. The only real walkthrough stuff I needed to know was like "okay, do I need any certain magic AFTER this dungeon but BEFORE this one?" kind of stuff to avoid ridiculous unnecessary backtracking.

Yeah, the dungeons themselves can be figured out pretty easily without maps/walkthrough, I used a FAQ primarily to help me in the same way noise did. I opted for looking at the world map on my iPad instead of printing them or making my own, though.

Really, I wouldn't cast dispersions until you've gotten at least half way into the game. It isn't always intuitive to figure out where to go/what you need.

It's too bad the game is nearing the end for me because as shamelessly as it's been ripping off Zelda it still has been a fun trip!

Thanks for the Wipers rec, I saw that box set on Amazon. Hmmm...

By the way, I just want to say that Golden Axe: The Duel is pretty awesome, and far better than Golden Axe Warrior. It has great framerates, excellent challenge, nice cast of characters, and rips off Samurai Shodown with far less quality loss than the Golden Axe Warrior rip off of Zelda.

So, for the record:

Golden Axe Warrior = Zelda 1 (but still good)
Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe = Zelda 2 (but quite bad)
Golden Axe: The Duel = Samurai Shodown-esque (but very good)
Golden Axe: Beast Rider = God of War-esque (but very, very poor)

I'm a bit late to the party but I can't wait to join. My copy should show up this week.

Has anyone finished the game yet?

I bought the box off Amazon, but it was cheaper on the official site and plus you're supporting Greg and his label (which he owns) -- there is also The Best of Greg Sage & The Wipers there which is the greatest hits, pretty much, and its a solid collection.

I saw Beast Rider -- was it done by a Western developer? It seems for the older properties the original Japanese companies publish them but Americans actually make them these days.

If anyone is interested I have an extra GAW map. (Two maps had a better print yield.) Map is free, you just have to cover shipping. Map is 20" x 24".

Not yet. I have only made it a screen or two past the Giant Monkey Ball boss...
I will keep working. I am playing on my GBA via the SuperCard and it only saves via savestates and I have only been using them at real save points in the game... but I may break down and use them as I go through D10.
I think Ill give it a couple more tries before I give in to savestates.
