is buying games at flee markets and thrift stores worth it?
Re: is buying games at flee markets and thrift stores worth
I will buy any game of value that I find at a thrift store, even if I don't own the system. The thrift stores around me are usually bone dry, but I find something every once in a while.

There's no reliable place to buy retro games where I live. When I find a good game for a good price in the wild, it feels like an amazing stroke of luck.

in the days of early internet before ebay and amazon, very few people knew the best value of games. Prices varied amonst sellers and most people wanted a quick buck.Icedawg wrote:In my experience it seems like people at the flea markets near me try to charge a lot more than they would be priced on Ebay. I've come across 2600 games for maybe $5 a piece or common Genesis games for like $10-$15. It's usually better at Thrift stores
those days are gone now.
Most everyone now knows how to use the resources of the internet. And its very easy to get prices now more than ever.
but just because a game was sold for a certain price online doesn't mean it should stay that way in person.
Cost and demand are the same wether online or IRL.
but thats not gonna stop a person from comparing online prices to RL.
You would do the same thing too. Some people dont sell on ebay or wouldn't even know how to, but they sure do know how to compare. You may be able to haggle with these types of sellers, but only so much. Thats why we should enjoy other types of opportunites to get the games we want.
there will always be that person/seller out there ready to make a quick buck.

This reminds me, once I went to Goodwill and they had a bunch of (complete) Sega CD games, I was knew to buying and "collecting" games at the time and honestly had no idea what a Sega CD was. Looking back I really wish I would've gotten them.saturnfan wrote:I will buy any game of value that I find at a thrift store, even if I don't own the system. And there was another time when there were some CIB Atari Jaguar games that I really really wanted to get (even though I don't have the system) but I didn't have the money
Stuff like that NEVER turns up here where I live, well it did that one time...
But seriously I should've gotten them.
In fact that reason I ended up getting a 32x is because I found some 32x games at goodwill and for some reason was drawn to the virtua fighter cartridge so I bought it even though at the time I didn't even know what a 32x was, I was hoping it was just a fancy genesis cartridge. lol

I often think this to myself as well. If you think 400 is bad, I have more than 3 times that many (just counting cartridge based systems) lying around my place. I only play a couple of dozen of them on a regular basis.
Sometimes they are a curse. When I first started collecting retro games I played each one quite a bit because I only had a few and thus could devote some attention to each. Once you reach a certain point though it just becomes impossible to give each game you have the attention it deserves unless you have an unlimited amount of time (I don`t) and you start to neglect most. Given how cheap most retro games are, it isn`t hard to reach that point. I have tons of games that I suspect are good and bought ages ago but still haven`t gotten around to playing. Maybe when I retire?
Still though I love having them, even the ones I don`t play. The cartridges of some systems have a lot of visual appeal (I mainly collect Famicom carts which look quite nice), so I keep a lot that I will probably never play just because I like the way they look. Also I`m trying to complete the Famicom cartridge set (1055 carts in total), so the whole thrill of the hunt aspect of purchasing them keeps me going. Its way funner to do that at used shops and flea markets than off of Ebay.
The only time I`ve bought games off Ebay was for my Intellivision (I live in Japan and games for that one are very hard to find here). Anything I can get locally in used shops I go for, especially if they are cheap.

I find a lot of stuff at market value. Unless I want it for my personal collection I don't usually buy it. Anything cool I see that I know is worth more than its current price I'll pick up and add to my trade list.
Some times it is hard to leave stuff behind but I'm slowly getting that control to leave things there for some one who might want it more.

I find these kind of posts around here somewhat regularly. There was a whole other thread created to hate on the top 100 games threads. Seems quite trollish to me. If you don't like a thread or have any interest in it, don't post in it and go read another thread.
