After reading what noise posted, do I proceed straight to the 5th dungeon or do I have to get a "second" earth magic?
I was stuck without earth magic once and it was a pain and I would like to avoid that again.
I just cleared the 4th dungeon -- here is all everyone should do:

Get the extra heart container near the Plate Mail (you'll need 9 hearts)

Get the Plate Mail (9 hearts)

Get the Earth magic upgrade (See Ax Battler where you first got it -- 100 horns)

Get the Thunder magic upgrade (See Gillius where you first got it -- free)

Make sure you have the Long Sword as well -- then find dungeon 5.

:?
the problem seems to be that the monsters aren't dropping a key when they are vanquished in the room where you have to hit the stone with earth magic. I may have to go buy a key, I guess.

can you buy keys? Haha. I actually haven't really been buying any items other than that apple you needed to buy to get the first magic scroll.

Actually, I found my one. It's in the wrecked village near the first dungeon, you can go through the fireplace to find a secret chest in one of the houses. Has a Golden Apple in it.

let's not pretend that asking for advice in a thread ("OMG Dungeon 4 Iz so hard guyzzzz!") is any different than consulting a guide from time to time.

I'm just giving you a hard time. I don't see how anyone could beat this game without plenty of help unless they had several months to commit to it. Much like my thoughts on Phantasy Star for TR -- I loved that game, but same thing. I think those SMS RPG's were built to really last you a looong time.

There are so many keys in the 4th dungeon you actually end up with extras if you do it right (don't know if they carry over)

And yes, keys are available in towns.
