(Get the Genesis versions especially with Taz Mania)
Genesis had some good Taz games, but you should do yourself a favor and check out SNES Taz Mania! Sunsoft always did good on the WB-animated ports there.

Also, a different background can't really classify them as "different" either. That is kind of silly....
Same game, small differences, many times vastly different prices.

When you mention backgrounds, are you talking specifically about the Earthworm Jim titles? This caught my eye, simply because that is the one reason why I prefer the SNES version of Jim1 over the Genesis version. The very first stage's background colors and graphics. For whatever reason, they look awful.

I wanted to join in on this topic, and I'm not trying to bash or take sides. I think that everyone's comments are justified, and most if not all of us have fond memories of these games for whatever reason.

My definitive version of Earthworm Jim 1 would be the Sega CD's sound, the SNES's graphics and control. And of course, the clam shell hard case of the Genesis. (I'm actually not even sure if the Genesis cart has a hard clamshell. The version I have is the cardboard boxed version.)

And to agree with what others have said, to me the definitive version of Aladdin will always be the Genesis version. It's just so much more fluid and animated.

Just my $.02

Eliminate Down wants to speak to you. I dare you to click on the eBay link. That is the current lowest BIN.

Aladdin isn't even the same game on the SNES and Genesis. You can't say the Genny version is the definitive version between those consoles when they are nothing alike except in name, license and genre. I do agree that the Genesis Aladdin is a better game, though. :)

Well I was talking US games... UK and JPN MegaDrive games can be a different story. Was considering mentioning that but didn't.

Still, can always do repros. I got my Eliminate Down repro for $25.

High priced classic Nintendo games is not a trend restricted to the SNES. NES games and accessories tend to go for inflated prices, too. I have fallen out of my chair over a few Craig's listings. NES sections in retro stores are aneurysm triggers to me.

Meanwhile, tripple A Genesis games seem to go for peanuts. CIB even!

I think there are a few key factors that have led to this.

1. Nintendo is still around. Sega stopped making gaming consoles with the Dreamcast. Nintendo continued on and even has a new system on the horizon today. This current brand recognition aids in retro product recognition. People KNOW who Nintendo is as a gaming and hardware company. Their products are fresh in people's minds.

2. A lot of people in their 20s today had a N64 under the tree for X-mas. The Playstation may have been tearing up the market at the time, but Nintendo was king to this age group and the Playstation wasn't really marketed to them. Sega's last console, the Dreamcast wasn't marketed to this group either. Sony and Sega were going after the 20 somethings of that time. This translates into buying decisions when it comes to retro hardware. They're going to pick up the SNES over the Genesis, because the SNES's library contains earlier entries for a lot of familiar series.

3. Retro Nintendo is hip. Popculture references it all the time. This new wave of neo-geek culture prides itself on Zelda and Mario references. This is is a status that retro Sega products have never really attained. Sure people know who Sonic the Hedgehog is, but I doubt their immediate knowledge of Sega goes much further than that. A lot of this comes from reason # 1. Nintendo does a hell of a job keeping their properties well marketed and relevant.

All of this translates into a higher demand for SNES (& NES) games.

Feel free to pick apart my theory however you see fit. I think both the SNES and Genesis are fantastic systems. Though, I feel the Genesis is more relavent to my bite sized gaming habits today. But back in the early 90s, the SNES was easily the most played system at my house.

I have and will always call it the "nintendo premium''

Even the lowliest seller knows what a Mario game is. And Mario is Nintendo.

Way back then I would find Mariobros/duckhunt for about a buck or two. Now this game, the most common nes game can go for $5+

Back then you couldn't even give nes mario away.

Super mario world was also the same. Back then when it was at its normal cheapest, you could get that game for about $5. Now its price varies and its only getting higher.

Locally for me, at fleamarkets SNES games are $8.00+ with no box.

I could easily get genesis games for half of that. Or less.

I don't know what makes the prices so different, but as a genesis fan I ain't complaining.

Fair enough.

Not a bad idea getting a repro of that. I'll have to look into it myself.

I think it was someone on the digitalpress forums that said it originated with Funcoland and other used games shops charging more for SNES carts than for Genesis ones. I guess they did that thinking they could charge more for anything with the name Nintendo on it.
