sega games vs snes games. snes still more expensive

Post by mas »

I just saw this commercial

I just thought to myself. After 20 years the snes versions are still more expensive than the genesis versions of games. I'm not talking trash about either system since I now have both but I'm surprised that after all these years snes versions of the same game for the most part is more expensive. tmnt, street fighter, mortal kombat, boogerman, sunset riders, spider man, battletoads/double dragon, I could go on but you get the hint. I just think it's funny and cool in a way. I wonder if anyone matters today which version to go with if they own both systems? For me it doesn't matter anymore. If the game cost 3.00 on genesis and 10.00 on snes then I get the genesis version until I find the snes version as cheap

I could be biased and say many SNES games were far superior to anything Sega put out, but I just believe that SNES carts are highly prized and collectible, especially in games that received a port to both systems, and even more so late in the lifecycle of both consoles. The commercial is correct that many games by 94-95 for SNES would easily run $70-$80, the only expensive Genesis game was that SVP-loaded Virtua Racing at $100 because of all the extra technology packed into it.

SNES RPGs, for example, always command a high price.

I don't understand this either. Genesis RPGs never command a high price, and many of them are of very high quality. Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force II stand toe to toe with the best of the SNES RPG library for sure. Not even the Genesis shmups have unreasonably high prices (with the exception of Musha Aleste, but with patience it can be had for 50-60), a genre which is notorious for getting price gouges. Although there are a handful of Genesis titles that linger in the $20-30 range, one can easily build a solid library for the cost of just one SNES cart.

I smell a fourth generation Sega vs Nintendo argument...

It is Fanboyism at its finest really. Plenty of games are equal in each system's libraries but SNES titles are always more expensive.

I will usually go for the Genesis ports first because of this, same game, more nostalgic system for me, half the price.

I pick up the SNES version, they seem to have better graphics and sound, and for the most part, the price difference is less than $5.

Easy, now! My fourth generation mindset, as well as the side I chose in the great 16-bit wars in the early 90s was showing when I saw that commercial. Now that I collect and follow the SEGA Dreamcast, I can respect Sega and their games a lot more, but not their boneheaded post-Genesis business decisions.

Plus, the Genesis had many superb arcade ports that never made it to the SNES, and many of them are shmups, so it curries my favor, if not for that

If this was directed at me, I was being jocular. I thought the silliness of what I said would have made it clear.

Agreed. Games on both consoles are typically superior on the SNES, though. Also, most of their decisions post-Genesis weren't bad within themselves; I'm sure the SCD would have been much more popular if third-party supporters of it made more than crappy FMV games and upgraded ports of Genesis games(while amazing, they show little creativity). The 32x probably would have lived longer if it were marketed as a new console; in fact, I'm surprised Sega didn't make a Genesis with a built-in one. The Saturn itself wasn't much of a problem, but the DC killed it off early and hope was lost once Sonic X-Treme was canned.

It was directed at why the same games are more expensive on the SNES than the Genesis.
