Sadly, so was Exed Exes -_-o.pwuaioc wrote:It turns people away by being for the Famicom only, and not being released outside Japan.

Xexyz (Hudson) -- YES -- it's also a hybrid but it's got its fair share of shmup-ing.dunpeal2064 wrote:Oh, and if we are counting hybrids, I quite enjoy Xexez.
Zanac is awesome! I still need to try Guardian Legend.

Dodonpachi
Esp Ra De
Dangun Feveron
Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou
Ketsui
Mushihimesama
Espgaluda
Espgaluda II
Mushihimesama Futari
Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets
And those are only the Cave shmups. Importing and shmups go hand in hand.
I really need to try Exed Exes.
Re: Let's talk about NES shmups
I just don't hear too much about NES repro shmups like I do about modding a Saturn and importing.

True dat.dunpeal2064 wrote:Importing and shmups go hand in hand.

And yes. Ports available are
Famicom import
Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1 (PS2)
Wii VC Arcade
and of course if you can find the Ultracade arcade unit too.
Just a warning, being from 1985, there are no hitboxes, bullet hells, reflect barriers, experience/power meters to build up, medallions/stars/point items, anime characters, heavy metal music, huge gigantic multi-part bosses and 3 part final bosses, 1 credit bonuses, spammy lasers and missles, and all that stuff I'm sure you're used to. Just a humble ship, power ups, shot-canceling bombs, other big point opportunities and a droning soundtrack that stays the same for much of the game -- see why I love it so much?

Re: Let's talk about NES shmups
True. The Saturn has around 50 shmups, and only 3 of them were localized.o.pwuaioc wrote:I just don't hear too much about NES repro shmups like I do about modding a Saturn and importing.
The NES has quite a few shmups as well, probably in the 20 range, but maybe 3 were not localized?
The only shmup really worth getting a repro of for the NES imo is Recca. It probably would not be worth importing a famicom and a realy copy of the game to most people, but the game is well worth having a repro of, considering it is by far the most impressive game I have ever played on the NES. The game moves about 5 times faster than Gradius, while having none of the slowdown (although quite a bit of sprite flickering to achieve this)
Sure, the NES isn't quite the shmup powerhouse that the Saturn is... but this thread is about NES shmups, and I thought mentioning the best one I have played thus far was legit.
A cart only repro could probably be had in the $35 range, considering I got mine with a box and manual for $45. This is far less than someone would spend on Battle Garegga, Hyper Duel, Blast Wind, Guardian Force, Image Fight/X-multiply, Zanac X Zanac, etc
And, to be honest, quite a few of those games are not the best example of a shmup for their system (aside Garegga)
I personally think investing in a repro cart of Recca is a must for any fan of NES shmups.

Wow, I must play this. Although, with no hitbox the game might be a bit too easyExedExes wrote:True dat.dunpeal2064 wrote:Importing and shmups go hand in hand.

Re: Let's talk about NES shmups
Hyper Duel is pretty damn good, if not for the aesthetics alone. Not the most exciting shmup but definitely a personal fav of mine on the Saturn. I think it's certainly a cut above the rest on your list (again, Garegga aside).dunpeal2064 wrote:A cart only repro could probably be had in the $35 range, considering I got mine with a box and manual for $45.
