Open PS2 Loader can also be used to stream games to a slim VIA an SMB share from your PC.. That's how i have been using it.

you can, but the compatibility is no where near as good as using an internal HD (HD is much faster) and cut scenes are bound to stutter when using SMB. Get a phat PS2. Reasons:
1. It's compatible with more titles than the slims.
2. Nostalgia value.
3. The HDD (if you're into that sort of thing).
