No, this is wrong. Any PC Engine, Neo Geo, Genesis/MD with a video upgrade, Game Gear with a screen upgrade, mod chipped PS1, PS2, Saturn, etc., is always of substantially higher value. I have NEVER seen a case where this is not true!
You ARE in the minority here, yet you claim that you can speak for everyone? My years of experience collecting and selling absolutely demonstrates the exact opposite, and I am sure that I am in the majority here. A simple look online at prices for properly modded systems v stock models demonstrates this equivocally.
You cannot compare game consoles to comics in this way AT ALL! Maybe game software you can (where collectors want CIB, including spine cards, inserts, etc.), but not consoles. Comparing them to cars would be more relevant, where the value goes up if they are properly modded above the stock model.
