3DO Memory Question

Post by KoLAddict »

I'm interested in getting both. Not necessarily soon, although a used retailer near me has a 3DO for cheap so I may end up getting that soon if it's still there after all the Black Friday stuff.

What I was wondering in regards to the 3DO is with the internal memory for saving. How does it store data? Is there a way to replace the battery or memory module safely in the event that it dies? I honestly don't know a lot about the 3DO. There are a few games I've always wanted for one but never had the opportunity arise that I could get one.

You can see in some of the pics that there's a coin battery. It's almost certainly a CR2032. You would be able to change it the same way you would in a NES, SNES, Genesis cart, etc.

This site has a pic of a Goldstar 3DO board: http://www.giantbomb.com/3do/60-26/

The picture is really low res, but you can clearly make out the battery (the yellow ring in the bottom right).

Awesome thanks. My last question then would be taking it apart, does that use just a regular screwdriver or some special tool like the other consoles?

I have never owned one, or even seen one in person, so I really can't tell you. I bet it uses regular old phillip head screws though.

I have a 3D0 model FZ-10 and I know it has built in memory. I see no slot or space for a battery. That or it has to be taken apart to remove a battery.

I dont like to take apart my stuff unless its really necessary.

But what I do know (have read) is that certain 3D0 games and demos have a file manager program where you can erase unneeded save files. This feature is weirdly not built in?

I dont remember how much built in memory it has, but dont expect it to be much even by todays standards.

It's probably soldered to the board like the other two models in the above links.

Huh, that sounds like N64 games. Games that use a memory card almost all have a file manager (you hold down start while powering on the console to access it).

How many 3DO games actually use saves though? A lot, or more like half?

Most 3do games use saves for high score if anything. Some games use a lot more space than others.

The FZ-10 has a built in memory manager.

If you have an FZ-1, you can access the memory from a demo disk or several games.

The battery is a simple fix. For the most part, I would recommend the FZ-10 unless you want the pro looking FZ-1(front loader).

Also, no fancy screws on these.
