The bogus discs affected the web browser disc, and some of the 3rd party games. They blamed it on a particular facility, and I don't recall any 1st party games being affected. Blue stinger was one, and the midway titles like Hydro Thunder, Ready to Rumble. You may see "NEW" on an early midway game manual. That was the 2nd round of pressings, guaranteed to boot up.Nemoide wrote:I preordered my Dreamcast from Toys R Us and picked it up on 9/9/99. One thing I got which nobody else has mentioned was a Dreamcast T-shirt. It was simple and black with white "Sega Dreamcast" text and a small swirl. I don't remember how, but I know I had two of them for a while. Sadly, they both seem to have gotten lost.
It also came with the orange "Generator" disc and web browser others have mentioned. I bought Sonic Adventure at launch as well. Apparently I lucked out by getting working copies of everything.
Question for those who bought Dreamcast on 09/09/1999?

Sonic Adventure had problems. I ended up with a copy of the game that worked fine for me, but I traded it to someone else who couldn't get it to work on their system despite not having problems with other games. The disc was pristine on the bottom. I'm pretty sure I remember other people saying they had problem with that game too. Obviously the web browser was 1st party.shallowgamer wrote:The bogus discs affected the web browser disc, and some of the 3rd party games. ^ Sonic definitely had problems. My Ready 2 Rumble has the sound issues that plagued the first round of those discs also.

Wish I still had that shirt. Wore it to work too many times and tossed it. Cannot remember anything about the demo disc, stupidly threw away the box several years ago. Know I got Sonic at launch and had every version of the Web Browser... Dreamcast was my only dial up internet connection from 9/9/99 to early 2002.Nemoide wrote:I preordered my Dreamcast from Toys R Us and picked it up on 9/9/99. House Of The Dead 2 is another Sega titles that was affected by this launch issue regarding faulty GD roms, so your theory of only affecting 3rd party launch titles goes out the window. The bogus discs affected the web browser disc, and some of the 3rd party games. It wasn't a theory. I said I didn't recall any. It didn't affect me personally except for the web browser.CD AGES wrote:House Of The Dead 2 is another Sega titles that was affected by this launch issue regarding faulty GD roms, so your theory of only affecting 3rd party launch titles goes out the window. The bogus discs affected the web browser disc, and some of the 3rd party games. Then consider yourself quite lucky. This issue indeed affected about half of the launch titles available for the dreamcast. It was a pretty nasty damper on segas otherwise successful launch. Luckily they were open and honest to the press and the consumers about it and took responsibility to replace all faulty GD discs that were sent to them or their 3rd party publishers participating in the exchange program.

I managed to get house of the dead, hydro thunder, ready 2 rumble, and soul calibur with no issues. It always tickled me that soul calibur was a "budget" title at $40. Simply amazing launch game that blew me away.CD AGES wrote:Then consider yourself quite lucky. This issue indeed affected about half of the launch titles available for the dreamcast. I thought $40 was the average price of PS1, Saturn, DC games back in the day... at least until PS2 showed up and $50 became the norm. could be wrong... I remember games like Blitz and Marvel Vs. Capcom being $40 on DC.I managed to get house of the dead, hydro thunder, ready 2 rumble, and soul calibur with no issues. It always tickled me that soul calibur was a "budget" title at $40. Nope. Even some atari games were over $40. My coworker paid close to $70 for his copy of pac-man.CD AGES wrote:I thought $40 was the average price of PS1, Saturn, DC games back in the day... at least until PS2 showed up and $50 became the norm. could be wrong... $50 was standard for DC. And many PS1 and Saturn discs too. Retail price for Panzer Saga was $55, and I passed on it because that extra $5 pissed me off
