People still read Gamespot these days? I thought Gamespot and IGN were the equivalents of the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror in this country?
You'd probably get more substance from a Spot the Dog book. Gamespot and IGN are a complete fucking joke.
GTAIV is the same game in principle to GTA 1 it has barely changed over the years except for a shift to 3D. Yet that gets a 10? Modern Warfare 3 which hasn't changed (at all!!) since COD4 gets 8.5? Makes a load of sense.
Skyward Sword is one of (if not) the finest games I've played this generation. It's a masterpiece.
Gamespot gives Skyward Sword 7.5/10

I still glance at IGN occassionally. Not because it's good, but more just to read something different. Plus they tend to cover more PSP stuff than other sites. But yeah. It's not really good readin'.

Even if it's a poorly written review, it's nice to see some score variance. Seeing almost all 90%+ for games like MW3 makes my eyes roll. I'm sure it's a pretty fun game and all, but no one has a differing opinion? Riiiight.

Wait what? wouldn't it be 3.75/5?
Or did I miss a joke?

It's basically a comment on how game reviewers seem to review games on a 5-10 scale as opposed to a 0-10 one. It's related to Xeogred's comment.

Except for JRPGs. They use the 0-10 scale on JRPGs these days in the West.
And shmups! Western reviewers seem baffled by shmups.

Gamespot, Game Informer, and IGN are the least trustworthy review sites in existence. I simply don't trust people who give turds like GTA, Call of Duty, and Halo 10/10 scores.
Don't even worry about stuff like this. Play the game, judge for yourself. If you want to get a feel for gameplay before buying the game, watch some youtube videos or read independent fan reviews.
Hyperdimension Neptunia got slammed by critics and it's the best game of the year. The art book alone deserves a 10/10 rating.

which GTA? There are good GTA's.

HN rules, but it's also very niche. I'm not surprised it got slammed. But I'd say it got "mixed reviews." A lot of reviewers seemed to get that it was interesting, but just weren't into it personally.
I also think Catherine was a better game, and most likely my personal GOTY.

Seeing niche games get slammed is always a bit disheartening, but "it's popular therefore it sucks" is a pretty lame attitude to have too.

...and good CODs, and good Halo games, etc. Many of which, in the current reviewing climate, are well deserving of 9/10s and 10/10s. Just because you don't see the appeal or quality in a series that doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean it is a "turd".
I thought most of the people on this site were past this kind of posturing, but it seems to be popping up a lot more lately as all the big releases for the year come out.
