When the action is too intense, using bombs to get out is the last thing on my mind.
Its the same for me. 9 times out of 10, I think that I can make it through the bullet storm. Panic bombing only really works for me in games with slower, denser bullet patterns, as I have time to realize that I am going to die.

I bomb a lot in Psikyo games too, mostly because their games will tell you that you should have bombed if you die with them in stock.

I'm with JT though, I really like when your entire arsenal is worked into the game. Ibara Arrange is quickly becoming one of my favorite games. 6 weapons to choose from (thunderforce style), 5 option formations (garegga style), and the entire purpose of the game is to bomb.

This is also why I adore Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets so much.

Thats right kids!! If you use continues, throw screen bombs, turn on auto-fire, or set the difficulty to easy instead of normal, you are not a worthy shmup player who deserves to burn in a fiery plague ridden cubicle accompanied by all the people who saved their game too much in J-RPGs.

I personally don't give a shit. People who do are elitists, and are who unfortunately cause the vast snobbery among shmup fans. All I do is play the game using whatever the game gives me, and then beat the game again on the hardest difficulty. Auto-fire is fair game (Come at me, angry shmup snobs.) Its great fun!!

If they didn't want us using bombs and instead reducing hitboxes till your ship can be grazed to the size of a pea without dying, THEN WHY DID THEY GIVE THEM TO US?

Yes, there are games that might penalize you for using them but they are few and far between.

Heck, look at a game like Giga Wing -- they give you a REFLECT BARRIER as well as BOMBS (but you will save them for a higher 8-digit payout end of stage!)

Also in 19XX: The War Against Destiny, that's the only game I've seen that lets you POWER UP your bombs before using them.

What about my namesake, Exed Exes? Yup, bombs are good there too, but they cancel out enemy shots and will NOT damage/destroy anything else on screen. Plus, you get extra ones every so often.

They are there for a reason, and I feel it is a matter of personal preference. I feel if a game gives you a bonus at end of stage for using them, it is good in your best interest to save as many as you can. Because honestly, in games that reduce you back to a pea shooter on the main guns on losing a life, you'll want to hang on to those bombs on bosses so your game doesn't end too quickly.

They are there for a reason -- depending on your games, respect them, USE them, hang on to them, WHATEVER!

I think you are misunderstanding us "elitists"

The ONLY reason that a shmup player avoids using bombs is when they are playing for score, and when using said bomb would ruin that score.

So, because we play for score and you don't, we are elitists? That makes no sense. If my only goal in Dodonpachi Resurrection was to clear the game, I would be done with it in a day. A lot of these games, however, are designed with score in mind, and for those of us who really enjoy playing the game for score, which is where the meat is at with recent shmups, using a bomb would result in a lower score.

I really don't think there is anything snobbish about that. In fact, your post is the most snobbish in this thread.

If you want to use continues in your game, thats fine. However, a well designed shmup will not require continues.

Again, taking the example of Dodonpachi. There are infinite continues. There is absloutely no challenge in beating the game with continues. None. I see nothing elitist about wanting to get the most out of our games.

Oh, and if you knew a bit more about the genre, everyone uses auto-fire. The only time I have heard complaints about auto-fire is in Darius Gaiden, and the complaints were not about the default auto-fire, but about an auto-fire hack that raised the rate so much that it made the game much easier.

Again, if you want to do that, go ahead. Or you could just put a Game Genie in and watch the ending, skip playing the whole game. None of us would really care. But thats not how we roll, because we are elitists.

Sorry to bump this slightly old thread, but that post irritated me.

Yes, I was very misunderstood. The only shmup people I've really talked to about shmups are people I've meet in real life, and they are all assholes about it. It lead me to believe that most shmup people are like that, so I apologize for being an asshole.

Thank you for opening this up to me.
