Games you didn't discover until after the system was dead

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

It just occurred to me that the entire Sega Dreamcast was basically a system I never came to know till way after it was dead. Back when it was popular, I thought it was identical to the N64 and Playstation, so I thought, "What's the point?" Then I picked one up around 2004-5 and got a Dead or Alive 2 demo and Shenmue and I really blew my socks off! I could have gotten a cheap Dreamcast instead of a Gamecube and been just as impressed back in those days.

I can more or less just say: Sega Saturn

I'm from Norway, and I can't remember seeing it in the store a single time. I have heard from my friends that they remember seeing it as a kid, but it was very very rare and unpopular. Didnt have much marked success here.

So all the games that are good for the Sega Saturn, I have discovered after the console was dead.

For me it was the entire Dreamcast thing as well. I passed it over in favor of a PS2. I got a Dreamcast for the first time about a year and a half ago and have collected quite a few games that I've really enjoyed. D2, Sonic Adventure, Arabian Nights and Revolt just to name a few.

It's funny, I don't feel like I'm missing much by not having an XBox 360 or PS3, don't know if that attitude will change as time goes by but then I've never been an early adoptor anyway. The PS2 was out well over a year and had one or two price drops before I bought one. I just kept happily playing my Saturn and picking up many more great games at really strong discounts. It seemed like a lot at the time for a used game for a dead console, but in hindsight my $38 purchase of Panzer Dragoon Saga seems like a genius move!

Omg! Me too!

Back in '95 when I lived in England I played a "BUG!" demo and wanted a Saturn... but then a year later when the N64 came out the Saturn virtually disappeared. No mentionable stock in stores, TV ads, local banter... it just poofed. Since then I've accumulated a Sega Saturn, Shining Force III, House of the Dead, Metal Slug, Panzer Dragoon I and II, Dragon Force, Nights into Dreams, Die Hard Arcade, Shinobi Legions, and a few other things dripping with all manner of 32 bit awesomeness.

Funny thing is, though, I don't think it would have been a good idea to get a Saturn back when it was popular. I wasn't involved in online gaming communites back then, so I'd have no way of identifying all the gems vs. the duds.

Only place I remember seeing Sega Saturn, was in some gaming magazines I had. I remember it was showing an ad for Sega Saturn + House of the dead.

My collection of Sega Saturn games is kinda "silly" from a collectors perspective, but genious from a retro gamers perspective. Only have Nights and Fighting Vipers as original games, and since I have a chipped console, the rest of the games are downloaded. ;) But just gives me the possibility to have a HUGE collection.

I missed out the Saturn completely, discovering most of its gems years after its corpse had already decomposed. I totally missed out on the Turbografx 16 and Neo Geo as well, and to this day I still haven't really played any of their top titles, unless you count substandard Neo Geo fighting game ports(and Metal Slug collections). I really want to play Sengoku 3 at some point

Portal gaming has pretty much been out of my experience since I sold my black and white Gameboy. I just don't how anyone who keeps up with console gaming actually has time for the portables as well.
