Games you didn't discover until after the system was dead

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Games you didn't discover until after the system was dead

Post by Anayo »

For example: in the mid nineties I loved my Sega Genesis. Like most foolish N64 and Playstation buying people I sold it around 1999 or so, then started reaquiring it later to relive the nostalgicness.

However, I didn't discover Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage 2, or Rocket Knight Adventures until I started re-collecting - WAY after the Sega's heyday. I thought, "Man, if only I knew these games existed back then!"

Has anyone had a similar experience? Maybe a really great game you didn't know about when it was popular, then discovered later on?

I was always a fan of the Castlevania games. I had 1-3 on the NES and then picked up IV on the SNES. Around late '94 or so was when I sold off my consoles and moved over to strictly PC gaming. Last year when I got a Genesis and SNES again I stumbled upon Bloodlines and Dracula X. I had no idea there were more Castlevania games for any of the 16-bit systems. Had I known those were coming out I might have hung onto my consoles a little bit longer.

I've had the Turbo Grafx systems (16, Express, and Duo) but as of recently, thanks to the Internet, I'm finding new Japan-only games for the Duo and that's pretty nice~ :)

I saw it for rent at a random Blockbuster once, I rented it, I "lost" it, I paid $6 for it, and yeah it had the sticker on it (it came off pretty easy) but it was $6 for something supposedly rare.

Basically every good genesis title I missed out on. All I ever played was Sonic, Streets of rage, Disney, and Golden Axe games. I completely missed out on Gunstar Heroes which is now one of my favorite games and the whole Shining series which I love but know I wouldn't have been into back when my Genesis was my main system.

When the Saturn launched I was only really bothered about arcade ports and games like Tomb Raider and had no knowledge of importing, as such I missed loads of awesome games. Since then i've developed a love for 2d fighters, SHMUPS and Strategy RPGs and the Saturn is a veritable treasure trove of amazing games from these genres, the most notable being;

Assault Suit Leynos 2
Astra Superstars
Battle Garegga
Blast Wind
Chaos Seed
Cyberbots
Dodonpachi
Dragon Force
Dungeons & Dragons Collection
Guardian Heroes
Langrisser series
Layer Section
Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari
Panzer Dragoon series
Policenauts
Princess Crown
Radiant Silvergun
Sengoku Ace
Soukyugurentai
Shining Force III
Terra Phantastica
Thunderforce V
Tryrush Deppy

Yeah I had a saturn and I was mainly interested in arcade ports and 3D games, I wouldnt look at a 2D fighter because it just seemed so outdated. Now I've rediscovered the genre and feel stupid for over looking it.
