Not saying that I agree with your stance at all, but Capcom is the perfect example of a company that has dramatically changed their business model in recent years to adapt to a newer, less-established market, and in the process of doing so, alienated a lot of their older fans that currently aren't too ecstatic about their new(ish) practices.

Anyway, nothing to add about Jobs that hasn't been said already - it STINKS. /Jay Sherman
Street Fighter 4 is way more complicated than street fighter 2. I don't see how this works out as an example at all.
Conveniently glazed over the entire SFIII trilogy there, bud?

Cherry-pick all you want if you don't agree, Ono said that he wanted to simplify the series because 3S was too complex, or something to that effect. Besides, I don't even agree with your statement, since 4 was designed to be more like 2 from the ground-up and all it can really claim over 2 is more ultras, characters and focus attacks - in terms of depth, it's practically the same game. If you want to know HOW it was dumbed down, it's simple, the removal of parrying - which was a universal tool everyone could use and it made each character viable if a player's parrying abilities were good enough. Focus attacks don't have the same effect, as focus attacks vary from character to character (some characters have good focus attacks, others don't) and just in concept, it isn't the same.

Stages were a lot bigger for one, you had Yoshi, all those secret exits and whatnot. Hardly a downgrade imo. At worst it's on the same level as SMB3.
The game is definitely easier though.

I give up faith in the retro community for having open minds.... But seriously? I saw one example in here, saying Oblivion was dumbed down from Morrowind. There is so much they took out that was not needed. It's great. Like spears, halberds, medium armor? They really added nothing to the game. The compass? Maybe its just me, but having the option to turn it off is still there. Plus, I had to modify Morrowind with some help so I wouldn't get lost. I looked for one city for like 6 hours once, just to find out that I had left from that city. It sucked. Sure, that is slightly on me. Ideally though, I could have been given a better idea of where to go.

FPS's being made linear, is dumbing down. That I understand. But with today's larger focus on story, a DOOM or Duke 3D style game would just mess up story, with no direct idea of what is happening other than killing the enemies. I love Gears of War, and it is linear. But if I could wander freely? I would probably keep away from the story. It's actually part of why I play games. I love a good story.

Mehh, rant over. I just don't get why everybody hates on the new stuff.

I think you nailed it with the last comment. Many want less of a story and more killing.

That's not to say every story sucks or some other nonsense conclusions that some here immediately jump to for god knows what reason.

Having the arrow in Oblivion stopped many people from reading the quest. Just follow the arrow and be done. Morrowind gave you a map to follow and you actually had to sit down and read the game. Hard? No, its called reading. Taking that out takes out the story that you say is a larger focus today.

You dont need a story to have a great game. I dont want to have cut scenes every 10 minutes explaining whats going on. Let me play the story instead of watching. Looking at you MGS4!

Over story telling ruins games. If I wanted heavy story I'd watch a movie. Heavy Rain did it right with letting you play the story rather than watching it. Games like MGS4 almost forced you to watch the story rather than playing it. I honestly think gameplay and music should come first before story and graphics.

Totally agree. I hope that developers get it through their skulls that video games and movies are two separate types of entertainment and that it is not necessary for your game (or in some instances, "game") to emulate a summer blockbuster in terms of presentation in order to tell a meaningful story.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

They might as well just put fucking Thomas Edison on that list while they're at it!

I mean, the dude had over 1,000 patents. I'm sure we could find at least a few that would relate to gaming.

Light bulb.

Hey, it's as good of an argument as having Berners-Lee on the list.
