What I would love to see in new 2D releases is a progression of the 32-bit era hand-drawn graphics in games such as Rayman, Astal and Claw rather than 2.5D or completely 8-bit... that and pre-rendered graphics like Donkey Kong Country.
Rayman Origins seems to be going this route to a degree, and it simply looks amazing.
POLL: New games reverting back to Retro Graphics?

I wouldn't say that realism negates a good aesthetic. Quite the contrary, really. Think less of games, and more of films. Set design, special effects, etc. High fidelity allows for amazing possibilities in that regard. Even with more grounded subject matter, things like color balance, lighting, possibly camera angles, and so on can be used to influence how you see things.lisalover1 wrote:I just want games that have an interesting and likable aesthetic. This can be achieved with both retro and current-gen graphical fidelity, but it less likely seen in the latter because of the game industry's push for realism.
It'd more likely that you saw more highly stylized art it in previous generations due to more limited tech. While it might be rarer to see in more modern games, it's also probably a deliberate artistic decision instead of one dictated by memory/resolution/etc.
Aye. There are some fighters still doing that (KoF XII/XIII, Blazblue, etc). Would be nice if the rumors of Vanillaware titles getting HD ports were actually accurate - Odin Sphere on PSN is just the PS2 version :/What I would love to see in new 2D releases is a progression of the 32-bit era hand-drawn graphics in games such as Rayman, Astal and Claw rather than 2.5D or completely 8-bit... that and pre-rendered graphics like Donkey Kong Country.

I wouldn't want ALL new games to revert back to retro graphics. It's pretty cool to do it every now and then (i.e. Mega Man 9 & 10). As much as I love the retro look of an 8 bit sprite from back in the day, I still truly appreciate the evolution of graphics and what they are today and what they will become in the future.
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

The difference between the old games and newer stuff like megaman 10 is that one choose to be that way and the other had to be that way.
Re: POLL: New games reverting back to Retro Graphics?
Wow, that 2000 Mega Man in the original post looks awful. I'd like the modern (and very wirey) Sonic to go back to his original design and stay there. The original Sonic was very inviting. You thought he was cool and you wanted to control him. But with modern Sonic I just want to punch him in the face.
I think there should be plenty of games that take full advantage of what a current console can do, but that doesn't mean that they all have to. It's like the Playstation 1 and 2 days where cameras would whip and zoom all around simply because they could and for no other reason. Screw that.

I would like to see more 2D games with hand drawn art that are the best the system can handle, without going over the top with bullet hell or anything like that. I don't like XBLA/PSN releases that blur the image or apply the old 2xsai engine to make it "HD". I really don't like it when they make the game 2.5D (looking at you TiT), and I hate that emulated releases today screw up the sound every time.
I would be foolish enough to think that we could have a renaissance of 2D gameplay thanks to these digital downloads, but I already fell for that hope with the GBA.

I didnt vote because there is no correct answer, all i want is developers to make games that are worth the money you spend on it and not meeting deadlines or just trying to rake in the dough, yes business is business but FUCK BUSINESS!
Re: POLL: New games reverting back to Retro Graphics?
So far there are more votes for liking Retro Graphics in modern games. Maybe not a completely impartial poll considering this is a Retro Site.
I voted NO, I want the best graphic capability my system can provide. Of course if a rerelease, keep the original look. Any modern game that jumps back to Retro Graphics of say a NES, just seems like I was cheated by the game company especially in light of how much more bang a new system can display. I think you can have a game with Retro style gameplay and utilize a systems capabilities.
Look at Wario World, platformer similar to NES Mario and with updated graphics.

Cell Phone games are probably the biggest Retro Revival, actually makes sense for the small screen in terms of the easier to see solid colors and quick jump into gameplay. Also for modern systems there are exceptions when done right, the N+ game for example.
Besides all the FPS, is this the direction of modern gaming?

Outside of Megaman 9/10, I honestly can't think of any games that have gone with the NES look.
