Do you like Contra? Quake? Subterrania? Trizeal? Halo? Sin and Punishment? Gunstar Heroes? Rainbow Cotton? Goldeneye? Baldre Force EXE?

SHMUP is simply a sub-category of a pretty vast genre. As are Run n' Gun, Hori's, Verts, Rail Shooters, FPS, Arena Shooters, etc. Its just one more way to clarify what it is. Pretty straightforward stuff.
I agree.
I disagree. I have not heard of anyone until now who actually thought that the term "shooter" refers to any game ever made in which a shot is fired. "Shooter" must simply mean "videogame" if you really want to be that broad.

I've never even heard of Hori's, verts or arena shooters. Who says that? If anyone said "horis" or "verts" to me I would think they had Downs Syndrome. Who comes up with this stuff? Of course hori could mean any game ever made that scrolls horizontally since we're being so broad here, right?

*raises hand*

If I'm quantifying something to someone else who plays Shoot Them Ups but isn't familiar with a specific game. There are people who only like vertical games and don't like horizontal ones. Arena games are of course a little different to play as well since you generally can shoot and move in different directions at the same time.

By the way, I never heard of Run 'n guns before this thread. I essentially call those shoot 'em ups. Horis I simply call horizontal shooters, and Verts vertical shooters or even top down shooters (don't kill me now)...

Lol you'd think someone had Down Syndrome for using a commonly accepted term amongst shmup fans?

You're pretty fuckin ignorant then. Don't know why your so upset and worked up, just because you don't like certain terms

Since all the good discussion has left this thread, I will follow suit

You think I'm more "worked up" than I am. Like someone else said, it's the cold nature of web text. Try not to read so much into it.

I'm 100% fine with the terms horizontal and vertical, but "hori" and "vert"? Are horizontal and vertical really that labor-intensive to say/write? I also say side scrolling or top down/overhead shooters. No real reason.

Just terms that most shmup enthusiasts know. Just like "tate". YOU don't have to use them. Just understand them. No big deal.
