I've always seen it more as an open-ended game of exploration (as with all the TES games), where things like combat and levelling were after-thoughts. Perhaps if you look at it that way, you might enjoy it.

Then again, I loved just walking around and exploring the land in Everquest Online Adventures (PS2) and had a wonderful time... so perhaps the open-ended exploration theme might not be your cup of tea?

You know you can adjust the draw distance in the options which pretty much removes the fog.
This comment actually got me thinking, as i've only played the xbox version it never occured to me about the PC one. So im gonna give it another go on PC instead and see if my views differ.
The PC also lets you dip in to the wide world of plugins to enhance your experience.

Rrrrriiiiise Thread. Anyway, I've always loved Oblivion and how there's something different every time I play, just like Animal Crossing. You can also pick it up for 5 minutes, sdo some things and get off.

I've just been playing for a few hours and am discovering that maybe I don't really like open world games. Or maybe I just don't like Bethesda's open world games. Originally I had played Fallout 3 and didn't really get into it. I like fantasy worlds so I decided to give Oblivion a shot. And it appears to play exactly the same as Fallout 3. No wonder people called Fallout 3 "post apocalyptic Oblivion with guns".

Anyway, this has inspired me to give Dragon Age another shot. It's not that similar except for being a fantasy RPG, but it felt more engaging to me.

I like Oblivion, but I prefer Morrowind. I can never get any of the mods to work properly for Morrowind on PC though. :x

Half the time the long view distance tools work and the other half of the time the game crashes. I gather that's what I get for buying the Steam version.

I hate saying it but I enjoyed Oblivion on console more than PC. When it comes to RPGs. I find being on the couch with my feet up, in pajamas, with a nice cup of tea is favorable to my desk chair for those kinds of games. The possible exception being KOTOR.

One of the thing I remember liking and not liking was that in Morrowind I would actually get lost and have no idea where I was. That never happened in Oblivion. I hated it but it added a sense of urgency and worry to the game LOL.
Thanks everyone...

Elder Scrolls IV has been on a shelf unopened except for a few hours of play over a year before this thread originally started. Got the 360 game and strategy guide cheap, but kind of intimidating to a guy whose used to mostly playing 16 bit console RPG's.

I didn care much for Oblvion because of the leveled system but i started playing it with Oscuros Oblivon Overhaul. It is very difficult at lower levels but the payoff of leveling up so you can finally stand your ground in battle is so satisfying.

It made a great first impression, but I got pretty worn out on the game after about a month.

Trying to close all of the Oblivion gates got so repetative for me, and as a mage, combat boiled down to me running backwards while shooting fireballs, then waiting around more my mana to recharge. That adds up to a real so go for a completionist like me.

That said, I'm looking forward to Skyrim. Can't wait to see what improvements Bethesda's made to the game.

I agree with the leveling system in Morrowind being better. But that's where it ends for me. Oblivion's fast-travel system is a godsend. You spent waaayyyyy too much time walking around in Morrowind. The creatures and enemies you fight in Oblivion are lot more interesting than Stilt Strider after Stilt Strider in Morrowind. And the graphics are definitely a step up in Oblivion. Plus the stealth elements in Oblivion are a lot more fun to play than using a stealthy guy in Morrowind.
