The funny thing is my friend's with the video issue doesn't RROD. The video just scrambles and craps out, then there's no picture until after another fix attempt. For both the ones I tried it was heat gun plus flux under the chip, then clean the flux residue after cooling. New clean thermal compound will help pass the heat along to the heatsink, but some machines just have worse problems with the solder joints breaking than others. Replacing the clamp might close a few broken joints well enough to work in one but not in another.
