ill make a guess and say it was something made by a cheap manufacturer that didnt even care about meeting the size standards, maybe like from China or Taiwan. A product designed in the wrong way.

Looks like Hobie got it right, with FiftyDollarCurse confirming it with the ad. Maybe the grooves allow for air space to get a finger in to pull the games out.
