no, just thinking "out loud" -- stating pros, cons and considerations to try to reach some sort of conclusion.

I'm not so fussed what we choose for RPGs myself. Im more interested in pinning down strategy, fighting, puzzle and shmup games. Still gunning for Yggdra Union or Command & Conquer/ DOA2/ Puzzle League (happy with Puyo Puyo though) for the first 3. Shmup is hard because Id like a bullet hell, but theyre so pricy!
yeah just trying to get closer to widespread agreement one genre at a time.

For the record, I agree with you on DOA2. And as far as strategy, I'm happy with Yggdra or Advance Wars.

RPG:

Dragon Quest: I would rather have the first one, but wouldn't mind doing any of them.

Baldurs Gate: While Dark Alliance is available for the most platforms (PS2, XBOX, GCN, and GBA), my vote technically goes for the first one. I'm fine with whatever.

Strategy:

You guys will have lots and lots of fun with Ogre Battle (and even more fun with Ogre Battle 64). Just saying.

I'm still in favor of Ogre Battle myself since I hear they're so damn complicated, we could probably combine our efforts to get through one of them together. Haha.

As for Dragon Quest if we want to go with a later one like 3-4 that's easier to approach I'm all for that. I'm cool with any of them though if they get the pick.

I couldn't find the list of past Together Retro games, I think Noise posted it somewhere. The actual list of games previously played over the years. Maybe as an OP Sticky?

This years Themes:

Dec: Shmup
How about BALL BLAZER?
Not sure where to categorize this one, maybe for April or August? There were various versions and a couple of similar games on a few other systems. I didn't care for the remake on the PS1, never heard of the SNES version. Both the 7800 and 5200 are very good. Ball Blazer is one of the few 5200 games that work well with the the 5200 floating sticks. The 7800 version works great with Genesis controllers.

Even at the Gameover screen you can explore the field and bump the opponent's ship around.

For shumps I think DoDonPachi is more newb-friendly than Ikaruga. I can see Ikaruga being something that people turn off after less than an hour of playtime.

Prices for DoDonPachi are not that bad, taking a quick look at recently completed and active ebay Auctions and PSN:

PS1 - $59
Sat - $35
PSN - $7
MAME - works perfect, free

there's also other games in the series that can be bought for less than $10 (iOS) all the way up to $100+. In other words, there's a range of price options and a bunch of different platforms.

I love Ikaruga, but price-wise it is about the same or maybe a little cheaper, it doesn't run near as well in MAME. and it is a lot less newb-firendly.

I dunno, the first shmup I ever played properly was Ikaruga. I love it. I suck at it, but that doesnt bother me at all.
