@Inazuma, you did it again. You made me laugh, unintentionally of course, but you did it nonetheless.
...but on topic. Something you are missing in regard to physical copies...umm, advertisements, lots of them, not just the little pamphlets, but also the logos in your face, company / brand recognition. I wouldn't know what Blizzard is if not for my copy of Starcraft 64 always staring me in the face, so now i'm more apt to buy a Blizzard game - but I bet these "companies" are too busy pounding us in the arse to think about that?
And i've seen waaaaaaay too many games come out at a $19.99 and $29.99 starting pricepoint to believe that said company is only making $20 on a $60 game.
Speaking of pricepoint, most downloads are between a couple dollars to a max (rare max) of $19.99. I don't see downloadable games pulling in $50 per anytime soon.
Beyond all of that, still being missed is that many many people prefer physical, to look at, to collect, a huge part of the video game industry is the collecting - look at how much people will buy for a chance at club nintendo garb. Look at what Limited Editions sell for, or black labels, etc.
@Flake, good point, other things are more important than video games. (pm please? remind me what they were?)
Sony brings PS2 downloads to PSN
Re: Sony brings PS2 downloads to PSN
I can't remember where exactly I read this but I did see a breakdown of where the money from a console game ends up. It was from 2008 or something but probably hasn't changed much.
From what I remember: Assuming the price was $60 the developer only received $15-20 per sale. The company who created the console received a bit less, and a roughly equal amount went to the publisher. There was another fee that I can't remember, and the final markup (a very small amount) went to the retailer. Manufacturing I'm sure factored into it but that is also very small percentage.
Of course, PC developers don't have to go through console licensing fees but they still may have to deal with a publisher if they are being funded through one.
I wish I could find a link to the article, but I'm not having much luck with Google/Bing. It was really interesting.

I call a spade a spade, and I speak in a blunt, honest way, regardless of who or what I am talking about. It's very difficult for me to modify my thoughts or words into anything other than the hard truth, even if it bothers some people. Tough fucking shit if the reality of the world you live in is too much for you to handle. That's not my problem so don't bitch at me when I point it out.MrPopo wrote: For the record, the mods have not locked any of your threads because "we can't handle it." Your threads get locked because you have a complete lack of social skills of any kind and undermine every one of your points through insulting those you claim to want to educate. Half the time I personally agree with one of your views but you still haven't figured out how to present your views in a less inflammatory way.
This is how I am around friends, family, co-workers and strangers. If I was in some kind of a situation where I couldn't speak in a truthful way, it would really upset me and I would try to get the fuck out of there. I have a very low bullshit tolerance.

Your own self-awareness is disturbing. You seem to think stating your opinions is some massively profound exhibition - its not. Its what we all do.
The only real difference is that you preface it with things such as, "I speak my mind, I'm true to myself, blah blah blech." Most of us are past the need to self-pat, and don't say those things.

This is exactly Popo's point. You can't do it in a non-insulting way. We don't have an issue with bluntness. We have an issue with you insulting people. If you had left those 2 parts out, it would've been fine. You can't do that can you?Inazuma wrote: I call a spade a spade, and I speak in a blunt, honest way, regardless of who or what I am talking about. I just laughed til I cried after reading this.Inazuma wrote:I shouldn't have to resort to hacking and piracy to play video games. I should be able to play the latest Call of Duty online multiplayer game legitimately
Also everything dsheinem said is pretty much how I feel about this whole "video games are dying" BS. Video games aren't dead til they stop making good games.
edit spade is a racial slur. I don't care but fyi that phrase came from and means well I wont type it but think about it by replacing the word with a different racial slur.

Profits don't work like that. Profits would appear after development, marketing and other costs are deduced. Perhaps you mean revenue.Inazuma wrote:Let me explain it a different way.noiseredux wrote:Izzy wrote:People buy physical releases because it is the only version of the game, or they prefer it over download (if both are available).Noise wrote:they are making money on physical releases. WHY do you think they'd decide to stop producing something that is making them money?
Halo 4 comes out as a $60 DVD with $60 of DLC. 5 million people buy the DVD and also get the DLC. Microsoft makes $400 million in profits.
