Would you rather buy a $2.99 disc or download a $9.99 PSN release?

John Keating: Why do I stand up here? Anybody?
Dalton: To feel taller!
John Keating: No!
[Dings a bell with his foot]
John Keating: Thank you for playing Mr. Dalton. I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way.

I *think* it's that "oh captain my captain" thing. Although I heard they were Navy sailors on a boat during WWII in that movie, so maybe this was a parody?
Maybe this will help:

I do agree that much of the drama could be relieved if Sony went ahead with their plans to allow "upgrading" physical copies to the network version, as with their original plans for the PSP Go. The logistics may be considered impossible. The high level executives may be concerned for piracy. Maybe the support drain would be too great to allow an end-user upgrade program.

I wonder if they have considered a mail-in program? Mail in your old discs to get recycled and they enable the games on your account.
Why would anyone give up their hard copies for a DRM Download! I would rather play the PS2 games installed with HDAdvance/HDLoader in a Fat PS2 and KEEP the discs, REAL MANUALS and cases.

I can also use my PSX Blaze Arcade Stick without any driver problems by sticking with the PS2.

^Beat me to it. So yeah, what he said.

I will however offer a free recycling service for anyone's old discs.

Do you know how hard it is to do a Robin Williams impression in text? Its hard. I have what I "think" are a bunch of decent one-liners, but only if enunciated appropriately :/

To get back on Topic

The shape of things to come
Not the ideology of games being rehashed to a newer console, but now the same exact games for repurchase on a newer console. The problem is the Digital Download format is taking over, there will be no choice of a hard copy. As far as the PSN PS2 list, most of the games are cheaper on the original disc at $2.99 at Gamesop, yet how many would rather buy the convenient click my charge card download vs leave the hibernation house?

I bought a obscure game for the Wii called Geon Cube on disc, the other consoles are a DRM only purchase. Thankfully the ICO-Shadow Colossus HD set came out as a PS3 disc. But how many other PS2 games will be chopped from the HD Disc option and only be a download? The industry is changing, eventually all the games and maybe even movies will be in a Stream Steam format only. Less upfront expense for the game companies, and an increasing number of buyers that would rather not go to the store.

Hmmm, I don't know. Seems like a leap to assume that. Physical copy sales are strong. Any one of us can go on ebay and buy an SD card with 500 DS games on it for $50 (or considerably less at auction), yet the physical copies of those individual games still sell for $10-20. We can burn or emulate all these older games and it has really not affected the value of their physical copy's.

I know i'm not alone in loathing download just as a preference, but factor in server issues and the simple idea of trading in a game you just don't like, there are more reasons to suggest the physical copy will remain for the foreseeable future, than signs pointing to the industry going strictly DL.

yeah I can't really picture any servers that will be able to handle the spike in data transfers when the first DL-only Call Of Duty (or whatever) comes out.

All they have to do is stop releasing physical versions. If everything was only available as a download, people would give in, even if they were unhappy. We already know damn well how fucking spineless gamers are. We are a bunch of pushovers.

If the PS4 and the next Xbox are download only, they will probably be successful. Most gamers wouldn't even care. For those who would care, they would complain about it on the internet, but end up supporting it with their wallet anyway. Even the people who insist on boycotts will be supporting it in secret. Sony and Microsoft know this to be true, and they are working hard on turning it into reality.

Honestly, we are pretty much at that point already. Many games already are download only. The ones that are released on a physical disc require DLC to complete the game, and also require the internet to play multiplayer.

As for Nintendo, they will soon be forced to make a decision between following in Sony & Microsoft's footsteps or going out of business.

I know this sounds crazy, but we are quickly reaching this point. Something big needs to happen or else video games are doomed.

but mj is saying they are making money on physical releases. WHY do you think they'd decide to stop producing something that is making them money? Stop and think about what you're saying, and ask yourself how it makes any sense from a business standpoint. You're the one always pointing out how much these companies like money.
