Oh it tops Zero 3. The last boss for Zero 4 is probably the coolest boss fight in the history of fighting bosses. The epilogue ties things up nicely, too.
SPOILERS FOR ZERO 3
Wouldn't it have been awesome if they'd bothered to draw Zero's original sprite in for the Omega copy?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Zero 4 beat. I'm a little mixed on it, I think Zero 3 was probably the best all around (with Zero 2 being a close second with some elements), as it really felt like the first two games built up to Zero 3 really well, but Zero 4 was kind of an extension... the story definitely wasn't over by that point, but it just felt like the build up to Zero 3 was a lot better with the characters and all. Zero 4 was by far the easiest and shortest too.
That ending though, wow. Great stuff and I can see why people were maybe comparing it to Gundam earlier in this thread, haha. The final boss theme was incredible, definitely felt like I was saving the world (and fighting some Final Fantasy boss, haha).
All around great stuff. I wasn't really into the collectathon ideas that most of these games had, but yeah. If you're into that I can see these games keeping you busy a good bit longer and there was plenty of other unlockables and stuff.
I'll have to check out ZX Advent sometime. From what I remember of ZX though, I think I'd easily put the Zero games above it.
Before that I think Megaman V (GB) and the X-X2 (GB) games will be next sometime for me.
Ah, "Xtreme". I keep forgetting that's what they're really called. Yeah I dug the little I played of both (the music was well done too! the arranged X2 intro stage theme blew me away), need to completely play them and finish them now though.
Epic remix of Zero 4's final boss theme here!
EDIT: It's too bad Inafune didn't pull an ending like that with X5. You guys probably know where I'm going with that, heh.
