I'd be curious as to how often this correlates -- as I find Ninja Gaiden more difficult but believe it to be a slightly superior game, and more enjoyable. Hm.

Re: Which is harder: Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania?
I beat both games in my youth on original NES hardware. I had a much harder time completing Castlevania than I did Ninja Gaiden. Both games have some annoying pieces to their levels. Ninja Gaiden has all those damn birds and bats that respawn and mess up your jumps, but Castlevania has Medusa heads and bouncy hunchbacks that are just as bad. I think Ryu Hayabusa is a more agile character to control than Simon Belmont though, so I ultimately find Castlevania to be more difficult. Largely this is due to the bosses such as Death and Dracula near the end of the game. It took me a long, long time to finally defeat Dracula.
In Ninja Gaiden, the Jacquio was really difiicult in his 2nd incarnation, but if you can survive that, the third alien form is really easy once you know what you are doing. In Castelvania, you need the holy water to beat Dracula's bouncing, lumbering beast form or else you are screwed and jumping some of his fireballs in his earlier vampire form takes impeccable timing. Both games are hard, but I found Castlevania to ultimately be the more difficult one for reaching the end credits.

I say Ninja Gaiden IIL The Dark Sword of Chaos was harder than both Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden. I still haven't beaten the final stage of that game.

I wasn't liking NG2. The stage hazards weren't fun, they were just annoying. NG3 though, I think is a lot of fun. I'm up to stage 5 or 6, I forget which. It's seems like the easiest NG on the NES, as well as being easier than the CV games too. Of course, I'm playing the Famicom version which has passwords. Why the hell would you take the passwords out of the NES release?
Re: Which is harder: Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania?
I've beaten both. I find Ninja Gaiden more fun overall, due to the faster pacing and less restrictive control over the character.
Both, I find, are quite difficult. Ninja Gaiden is generally easier, but the final stage gets so frustrating that I find it harder to complete the game. Castlevania is harder overall probably, but that last part of NG just makes me place Castlevania as the ever-so-slightly easier game to defeat.
Ninja Gaiden II is much, MUCH easier than the first. I actually enjoyed the windy level in it. I honestly haven't played much of NGIII. I found it harder from the start, but... haven't put enough into it to honestly rate it.

Re: Which is harder: Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania?
I've also found the NG games to be more fun than Castlevania. I really never loved Castlevania until Symphony of the Night took the series in a new direction. I played the previous games because back then there weren't tons of games out so EVERYONE had played Castlevania, but just like the way I didn't fall in love with Mega Man until the Mega Man X series, it was Symphony of the Night that made me a Castlevania fan
I love it when people can take a stale series and inject new life into it. I loved Resident Evil 4 too. Sometimes change is good

Not that I have finished either, but I can get further in Castlevania.

Exactly. I've beaten both, but I feel like NG was a bigger accomplishment.
