You don't need to mod the Saturn. Just buy a cartridge for about $30 or so. Lots of the non-RPGs are 100% in English anyway.

Most systems don't have to be modded to import games. There's nearly always some disk or adapter that will do.

Often you can just get the actual JP system for the cost of the chip+install or swap disc anyway, and no hassles.

And I learned Japanese while playing online Japanese games, mostly from communicating with other players. Just jump in and immerse yourself. You'd be surprised how fast you can learn a language if you have the desire to do so.

Fuck learning a language through school type bullshit like textbooks, homework, studying, etc. Make learning Japanese fun by playing video games and watching anime. You will learn the same way a baby learns its first language.
I've heard people say that plenty, but I've watched anime for 5 years now and don't know any Japanese at all excepting the most basic of words such as title honorifics, and common used weeaboo words like "baka", "kawai" etc. and that's only because they're often used by Japan worshiping westerners. I still to this day cannot speak a single sentence of Japanese and it's not as though I haven't tried. All the animé I watch is subbed (often because I watched it before they even made a dub) so I've had plenty of exposure to the language. None of it sticks, quite frankly I may as well be listening to a pack of wolves growling, barking, yelping and howling for all the sense it makes, the most I can make out is a basic emotion... if that.

Of course you don't speak Japanese! You can't learn a language by reading subtitles. You need to study the language properly, but that does not mean you should underestimate the value of consuming Japanese material. Especially if it's Anime or TV in general.

Turn off those subtitles! You are depending on them too heavily.

But surely without the subtitles I'd not have the faintest clue what's going on... I suppose I could re-watch old episodes without subtitles, where I already know the basic plot but I'm not sure how well that would work.

You are right that you won't be able to understand much without subtitles, but it will force you to try to understand the Japanese more.

Good idea about rewatching stuff. Try to pick something that's very basic, like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Inazuma Eleven, One Piece, etc.

Hey, first time learners! This week's Japanese vocabulary word is "nakama"! For that matter, so is next week's! The week after, too! Also the week after that one! Actually, we're going to be studying "nakama" for a really long time--possibly forever--so go ahead and get comfortable with learning it now.
