Is the Sega Saturn overrated?

Post by jod5000 »

I'm just wondering because i hear so much about the Saturn from reading peoples posts on this site and what's so good about the saturn? Didn't the psx have a better library and n64 had higher rated games? Im just curious about what's so good about it. Please tell me.

Like any system, it has its followers.

Overall the N64 and PS1 both had larger numbers and generally more commercially successful games. However there are many games on the Saturn (Fighters / Shmups / Arcade Ports) that are either exclusive to the console or just leaps and bounds ahead of what the PSX could do with 2D games.

The console (like the Dreamcast) is not for everyone, but for those people who love Sega's style of gaming, there is nothing better than it.

Also considering how poor it did compared to the PSX / N64, pretty hard up to call the system overrated.

Much like the SegaCD and Dreamcast, many people think the systems are worth owning for the small amount of exclusives, because they are that good.

It has a nice mix of titles. In the end PSX has a better library, but the Saturn does have some great unique games. It had a ton of potential, but it just wasnt given the support it needed. Sega pissed off developers first by the early release then other actions.

I've often wondered the same thing - but there are quite a few gems in the Saturn library apparently.

Since I don't own a Saturn I can't really say much - but I know it has a lot of rare and well made Shmups and the best arcade ports.

I think it seems overrated on here simply because we have so many Saturn fans on here (nothing wrong with that) - it just seems like it was way more popular than it was.

The Saturn has a reputation for amazing 2 dimensional games, something the Playstation and N64 had moved away from back then. The system was built for 2D games. Some of Capcom's fighting games from the arcade could not be ported properly to the Playstation, but had arcade perfect ports on the Saturn

The system also had some great games that you couldn't find on other systems and a large number of excellent imports from Japan. Plus, the Saturn six button controller was one of the best ever, especially for 2D fighting game. Oh, and some of Treasure's most beloved games were Saturn exclusives. The system had some great rpgs too like the legendary Panzer Dragoon Saga. Collectors love the Saturn, it has a lot of exclusive games that are a bit pricey to buy now off ebay or online. So having a Saturn collection is kind of impressive. Some people think Radiant Silvergun is the rarest game ever, which isn't true. It is sort of the poster child game for collectors of rare titles though

Yes I do.

It is not quantity. It is quality.

If you compile a list of the 100 best games released from 1995-1999, and included US and JP releases, I venture to say Saturn would have 60+ titles on that list, PSX 30, and N64 10.

oooh not so sure about that one... I think it is all preference though...

I see a lot of the arcade guys like the Saturn and you are an arcade guy. I never really was much for arcades. I bet our top 100 would be different from yours lol

I know PSX is going to have at least 20 amazing RPG's, but the Saturn is not all fighters / shooters. There are some superb platformers and action/platformers that simply never were released here.

Psychic Killer Taromaru
Tryrush Deppy
Super Tempo

And just amazing 2D stuff again, that a lot of people don't know is out there.

Ninku
Nekketsu Oyako

And this doesn't touch on the epic US released stuff:

Guardian Heroes
Burning Rangers
Panzer Dragoon Saga

And ^ that doesn't touch on ANY of the SHMUPS/Fighters, which, I mean yeah, don't get me spouting shooters for the saturn, i'm getting all hot and bothered!!!
