Re: Is the Sega Saturn overrated?
Several (not all) of the multi-platform games that were listed are better on the Saturn than on any other home console of the time. In particular, nearly all of the Capcom games are considerably better on Saturn than on PS1. This is one of the reasons it was favored by arcade/action junkies.final fight cd wrote:some i agree with, some i don't. but thanks for making a list.CD AGES wrote: laundry list
it seems a lot of those games are multiplatform, which is okay. bust-a-move is a good game that i enjoy, but i don't have to buy a saturn to play it.

Ha ha, fair enough! The list was just so close to complete (From what titles I know) that I had to mention those. Plus, Galactic Attack is my favorite localized shooterCD AGES wrote:Lol! Flamepanther is right on the money! He noticed that my list only included multiplatform titles that were superior to it's PS1 counterpart. That's why I didn't mentioned ports that were about the same in terms of arcade accuracy between both both platforms (Marvel Super heroes, MK trilogy etc)
I will Get Galactic attack nowHa ha, fair enough! The list was just so close to complete (From what titles I know) that I had to mention those. Plus, Galactic Attack is my favorite localized shooter

Well, out of the Capcom games that were mentioned, I think Mega Man X 4 was better on PSX due to transparency effects. Other than that, I think they all favor the Saturn.

Saturn Bomberman, Sonic Jam, Sonic 3D Blast, Astal, Gex, Spot Goes To Hollywood, House Of The Dead, Daytona USA, Fighters Megamix, Road Rash, Alien Trilogy, Solar Eclipse (which still everyone ignores, it's a great game and a Saturn Exclusive in North America), Baku Baku, Street Fighter Collection, Bust-A-Move 2, Primal Rage, Sega Rally, NiGHTs Into Dreams, Tomb Raider, Croc: Legend Of The Gobbos, Crusader: No Remorse, Earthworm Jim 2, Gex, Quake, HeXen, Rayman, Resident Evil, Megaman X4, 'D', and WipEout.... that's 30 North American domestic releases without including either RPG's or 2D Shmups.final fight cd wrote:what are some good US saturn games outside of RPGs?
I think that's a pretty good selection personally, there's platformers, fighters, racing games, first person shooters and survival horrors.

Re: Is the Sega Saturn overrated?
Not terribly exciting lists, lots of multi-platform and stuff like Quake, Hexen and Crusader: No Remorse no console should take credit for, but what can you expect ignoring the two top genres. I don't see why one would limit himself to US releases only. Same as with TurboGrafx, why bother with that, as it doesn't have too much to do with US either. Japanese games are cheaper and are taken much better care of than US games, and the jewelcases hold up better anyway. Not to mention many people seem to have Japanese box-art fetish. Language barrier can be overcome by studying the language, I don't think that's too unrealistic goal for retrogame enthusiast.
Re: Is the Sega Saturn overrated?
In short, the Saturn holds up better than the PS1 and N64, primarily because it was all about 2D graphics rather than 3D.
When you go back and play games like Final Fantasy VII on the PSX or GoldenEye 007 on the N64, it's like watching the music video for Dire Straits' "I want my MTV" - what was cutting edge 3D tech back then looks painfully primitive now. However, games like Vampire Savior and Albert Odyssey will always look good, no matter what time frame it is.

Because, you know, all retro gamers have tons of time on their hands to learn an extremely difficult language.Korpi wrote: Language barrier can be overcome by studying the language, I don't think that's too unrealistic goal for retrogame enthusiast.
