I think you really hit the nail on the head for me. Link to the Past is my favorite game of all time. Not my favorite Zelda, MY FAVORITE GAME. But Ocarina just didn't do it for me. It felt ugly and clunky to control and just... never quite exciting for me. At least Majora's Mask was fucked up and weird. It really offered something unique. And then when Wind Waker hit, it felt to me like LTTP in 3D. It felt to me like the game that everyone said Ocarina was, but I didn't agree with.

Annnd.... it felt like it was running through the motions. I never had this feeling with the other Zelda games. Of course, I'm one of the black sheep that REALLY loves Twilight Princess. I always loved the wolf portions too. I can't explain why.... I've always liked wolves/dogs/coyotes/foxes, so anything with them makes me like them more for some reason.

Oh, and I am kinda getting the same vibe with Goldeneye. It feels old and clunky, unlike say, Doom, which I thought aged awesomely.
I'm just kidding, I was a fanboy for the game as a kid, but can understand the various reasons why it doesn't tickle some folks' gaming glands*. Mind, I am cynical sometimes in finding that some folk who tend to not like these big, genre defining titles tend to claim so out of a sense of contrarianism, instead of any legit, critical objection to said games' place in the wider gaming cannon.

*Disgusting imagery fully intended.

i love how they have blacklists, and "noobs" cant get in games that veterans play, if all online games were like this..... brix would be shat.
League of Legends isn't nearly as bad as DotA in that regard.

But don't just think that other online games are fine. Ever try playing an old FPS online? They won't ban you because they're happy murdering you over and over again with their supernatural reflexes honed from 10 years of playing the same game religiously while we went for a more balanced spread.

Wow Horseman, are you trying to win me over or something. I couldn't agree more. Twilight Princess is one of the better Zelda games by far, where as Ocarina Of Time felt like someone 3D-ified Link To The Past and accidentally removed the charm. I also like wolves too, they're cool and no I don't think my "three wolf moon" t-shirt is tacky, I think it's awesome.

As for GoldenEye and Doom. Again I agree 100% but in my opinion, people should go back and play Alien Trilogy on the Sega Saturn, now that was a great FPS game, and in my opinion the best of the genre from that generation.

Really? I think they have aged very well. Most games that just rely on gameplay and story and not graphics age well to me. Every now and again I get the itch to go back and play one. There are also resolution and widescreen mods for the games to make them look better on newer technology

Ok, ok, as much as I loved OOT growing up, I was always a little surprised at the whole 'greatest game ever' tag it got later on.

Retroactively claiming that OOT sucks compared to its successors is kinda silly to me though, considering it's pretty much the foundation upon which all the 3D Zeldas are built. I'm not really talking about the people who felt let down because it didn't live up to alttp, or the people that just weren't into it when it was new, but yeah.

Also OOT has no charm? Wat? Maybe I'm just picking up on some charm you guys aren't!

Wind Waker was great, I even love the sailing. Twilight Princess I loved until the last oh, 1/3rd of the game? It felt a little empty, like it was missing something or like they cut a bunch of stuff out to get it ready for the wii launch. Plus it was piss easy, but that's kinda par for the course by now.

---

I don't know if there's any game I have an outright irrational HATRED for. There's a lot of stuff i'm indifferent to, sure, but I tend just avoid things I really don't like.

I'm not really a huge Zelda fan (I suck at the NES ones and haven't played LttP) in fact OoT is the only Zelda game I've actually beaten besides Wind Waker. I definitely wouldn't say it's the best game ever or even the greatest Zelda game, but for me it's a pretty damn decent game. I actually felt like I was on an adventure while playing it and the game has tons cool secrets/sidequests. I felt it definitely had a lot of charm.

Majora's Mask seemed cool - but the gameplay was too tedious for me to get into, and it didn't have the free roaming/quest like feel of it's predecessor.

That's just my two bits.

Halo, GTA, Call of Duty, etc...

Fratboy garbage, video games for people who don't like video games.

I don't know about all of you, but Wind Waker was by far my favorite Zelda. The first 3 console Zelda games felt too obtuse and limited for my tastes. Sure, they were good games and I enjoyed them, but I feel that Wind Waker is everything a Zelda game should be. Also, I hate Majora's Mask. I think that any exploration-based game that gives me a timer to complete it is inherently broken. OOT was really good (despite the fact that I have yet to finish it), but even back then, the graphics and the entire art style of the game were just unsettling and kind of creepy to me. It drew me out of the game, and I was never able to get into it the same way I did with WW. Also, I absolutely adore the "Oracle" titles in the series.

Finally, at the risk of alienating myself even further from the rest of you, I really have to say something: I don't like the NES. I just don't. To me, the system has no personality or charm to it, and just makes it feel unmemorable and bland. I love my Master System because it has all of those things. Sure, the library pales in comparison to the Famicom, but all the games have a unifying style and feel. Plus, the system just feels a lot more interesting. To me, the NES is just a grey box that happens to play games.

You do know you don't have to finish Majora's Mask in those 3 days right? You pretty much just run around on a never-ending time loop. Oh well, everyone who hates MM hates the timer. I never felt rushed once in that entire game.

The entire unsettling/creepy vibe going on in OOT is one of the reasons people like it so much I think.
