Irrational hatred for a game?
Irrational hatred for a game?
Has a game ever rubbed you the wrong way that you developed an irrational hatred for it? For me, I absolutely hate Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA). I just thought the story was so insipidly stupid that it makes me angry just thinking about it.
But when I think about it calmly and rationally, the game itself is actually a pretty good strategy RPG that I probably would have enjoyed under normal circumstances. It’s just there is something about the story I can’t get past.
Anyone ever have a similar experience with a game?

OOOoooooh yes, but I think it's justified. Conker's Bad Fur Day makes me feel real pangs of anger because it acts like it's a revolutionary new game with incredible gameplay, humour and wit but it's just a Super Mario 64 clone with toilet humour that would be childish to anyone old enough to relate to any of it. The drugs and alcohol in the game also goes much to far.
This is the same reason I absolutely can't stand Duke Nukem Forever. Same thing, only worse because the makers think they're being self-referential which is somehow even more irritating.
Hmmm, a game I hate but have no real reason to hate.... hmmmmm.... got it. Sonic CD. I'm a big Sonic fan, I always have been. Love Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles, Spinball and even Sonic 3D Blast. I really like both of the Sonic Adventure games, I watched the cartoon and I read the comic... but somehow Sonic CD just pissed me off and felt... fake. I've still to this day never finished it, it feels like someone made a fan-game of Sonic and is making me play it but it's "just not the same" yet I know it's generally considered one of the best Sonic games ever made, I just don't see it, I really don't. That's more what you're thinking right?

Depends on what others label as irrational.
Dr.Mario (NES) really rubs me the wrong way. The music is muted, the controls are slippery, and that plumber is a pill-pushing maniac. (I do like the music... on the GB version.)

X-Men for the NES. Just the thought of that game makes me want to puke, I stand by and say its the worst game ever made.

The Halo games. I just can't understand what people think is so special about it.

I'd have to say Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter. When details of the game started surfacing I became very pessimistic and that negativity eventually led me towards blind hatred towards the game.
From what I've been told it's a solid game, but the mood and art direction... hell, the overall visual design, and especially the character design, deviates too far from the normal Breath of Fire formula for my tastes. As such Breath of Fire ended at IV in my book an' I still, to this day, have not and will not play Dragon Quarter.

Sports games. While they're fine I just like playing in real life so much more. Don't think that counts as irrational though.

Re: Irrational hatred for a game?
That's a real shame. It's very true that it's not a Breath Of Fire game. The designers even said that the reason they didn't number it is because they wanted to do something different with that game and didn't want to give the impression that it was part of the main series. It doesn't feel like you're playing Breath Of Fire at all, but it's a VERY good game and I recommend it thoroughly. It's also one of the few RPGs that requires tactics and planning to beat, not just level-grinding.Runefaust wrote:I'd have to say Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter. If you can ever get past that hatred and give it a chance, just pretend it's a completely different IP, it's a game you'll probably really enjoy.
