Re: Hurricane Irene
Heavy rain here in Southern NJ/Philly area.. Some strong winds but nothing too severe yet.. Main worry is flooding and a tornado was spotted about 35 miles from me..
Also, anybody familiar with Wildwood, NJ - water is up to the board walk - beach is gone!

Re: Hurricane Irene
Just woke up. Wind is blowing good right now. Power went off at least once last night (while I was sleeping). I'm expecting it to go off and on here and there, and it might very well go out and stay out for an extended period of time. I'm on my laptop right now in case it goes out again (though I'll get kicked offline, at least I'll be able to shut down the laptop properly).
I just checked News 12, my job is in the voluntary evacuation area lol. I actually work Sundays, so Mother Nature is giving me a day off with this shit.
Perhaps I should cook some eggs or something before the power goes back out.
Hows my other NY'ers doing? Hows every one else?

Re: Hurricane Irene
Ugh. I'm going o be spending at least 4 hours cleaning up this mess.
Re: Hurricane Irene
Yeah, I'm not looking forward to that part. Like I said earlier, I'm fully expecting my neighbors shitty fence to come down. He's fucking helpless too, so any way you slice it, I'll end up having to work on that.
Re: Hurricane Irene
I heard on the radio about the fatalities in North Carolina. How did things turn out for you Luke?
Re: Hurricane Irene
Not too bad. Have been cleaning up since about 7am, but there are a lot of hanging branches that are at least 20' in length and probably over 6" in circumference. A few trees are down in our neighborhood, but it was great to see everyone out early in the morning starting to clean up. Great neighbors, great neighborhood.Ack wrote:I heard on the radio about the fatalities in North Carolina. How did things turn out for you Luke?
I'm out a storm door and a few sections of my wooden privacy fence. The door, I'm not too worried about as that should be covered by homeowner insurance. The fence is a different story. I've been trying to nail the fence back to the fence posts, but with sub par results.
A friend of mine's house in New Bern has some standing water on the first floor, nothing too worry about, but still a pain in the rear end. I was worried about the third floor of my place since that is where all my games/comics/movie room/arcade dwells, but no structural damage, and every shingle is intact on the roof. That said, cleaning up all the leaves, twigs, branches, and limbs on over a third of an acre isn't much fun.
My wife's school is closed indefinitely, but it looks I'll back at the office tomorrow morning (I'm assuming), which is good news. Besides the offices, my building is nearly 1million sq. ft., so I'm anxious to see what damage (if any) has been done to inventory.
But our power is back on, and all is well. I really enjoyed the few hours the power was out. The wife and I played cards and board games, which is always good times. The only thing that really sucks is that our VP's uncle recently passed, and is unable to attend the funeral due to the flood. That, and my cousin (like many others I am sure) is stuck at an airport and will miss a few comedy gigs. Luckily all I had planned for this weekend was planning for next weekend.
Hope everyone else fairs as well as I did.

I wish I had the skills to draw (or a copy of photoshop) to create this scene.Luke wrote:Forget bottled water, bread, and milk. I'm buying a sixer of heavy seas beer and an inner-tube. Older. Not wiser.
Re: Hurricane Irene
Wow, Luke, sounds like you guys got hit pretty hard. Apparently we lucked out on the East end of the island. As of now, there's no more rain. The winds are suppose to kick back up and stick around for a while. So power outages might still be an issue. I heard there's scattered outages West of here. Also, downed trees and whatnot. The areas they evacuated are still in effect. I don't see any downed trees around here (though I haven't left my driveway yet) but there's a ton of branches and leaves covering the ground. There's a branch that came down right where I normally park my car, luckily I decided to park it elsewhere last night. I don't see any pieces of my roof anywhere, so that's a good sign.
And my shed stayed put, probably only because I tied it down.
I noticed a few missing pickets from the shitty fence, but all sectioned actually held up. Well, at least up to this point, the wind is suppose to kick back up for a while. My front storm door got a little messed up. The glass is fine, but I guess it blew open over night and now it doesn't close properly.
I surveyed my property real fast before, I see a few more branches that might come down. I think my neighbors spotted a big branch or tree that might be threatening to fall because I saw them looking up at a tree and then they all moved their cars.

Are you sure about that? I mean, you probably have a $500 deductible on your HO insurance.Luke wrote: I'm out a storm door and a few sections of my wooden privacy fence. The door, I'm not too worried about as that should be covered by homeowner insurance.
