Hurricane Irene

Post by dsheinem »

The Weather Channel claims that "Major Hurricane Irene poses an extraordinary threat and is one that no one has yet experienced from North Carolina to the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast to New England."

"No one has yet experienced"? Meaning this is some new brand of uber-hurricane not seen in the past century on the East coast? Seems like we've had some bad ones in the past... It is harder and harder to sort hyperbole from fact in the news media...

Any racketboy members evacuating their town?

Well the Mid Atlantic and New England states hardly ever get hit by a true hurricane so I suppose most of us have never experienced a storm like this.

Ah, good point. I was just thinking that hurricane Andrew was a cat 5 and that Hugo was nasty too...both were in the past 20 years. I guess Katrina was only a 3, but all the problems were caused by the poor levee system in a town below sea level

Do we have any cities with comparably bad setups on this coast?

Jersey's last Hurricane was 1903. Wow.

I remember Hurricane Bob. Late 80's or early 90's right? That was a big one.

Hurricane Floyd demolished Greenville, NC, and I'm hoping Irene stays the hell away from my new home.

Oh and check it:

Which reminds me, I need to get my comic books out of my attic. That should only take...Oh I don't know. A day.

I've heard from more than one source that it's comparable to Hurricane Gloria of 1985.

Early 90's. I remember Bob as well. I was pretty young, but I do remember it.
