The worst fanbases
Re: The worst fanbases
IGN staff nintendo fans. Are they on their 4 millionth article about how nintendo is letting down hardcore fans yet?
Re: The worst fanbases
How about IGN in general? ... lol. Haven't touched that site in years and don't plan on going back.Jrecee wrote:IGN staff nintendo fans. Are they on their 4 millionth article about how nintendo is letting down hardcore fans yet?

Same here. They very much have earned the line that always comes up whenever someone discusses IGN: "You can't spell ignorance without IGN!" They lack a certain professional quality.Xeogred wrote:How about IGN in general? ... lol. Haven't touched that site in years and don't plan on going back.Jrecee wrote:IGN staff nintendo fans. Most of the Autobot designs are fine. The robot-from-automobile designs aren't as different as people like to pretend. The Decepticons other than Barricade are where they really needed work--Megatron and The Fallen especially. Even Starscream's design grew on me though.Xeogred wrote:Word, they need more color. Not to say I'm blind and can't tell them apart, but they aren't very distinguishable. And as you said, they aren't even the stars of the movies. I bet a fan edit taking out the human stuff would strip down 70-80% of the movie, kind of like if you wanted to see Inception without Ellen Page... that's pretty much impossible.ZeroAX wrote:No, the problem with Bay's transformers is that they look like shit and they aren't the stars of their own movie. But those movies are so shitty you just can't stop yourself from complaining about everything. FFS the Transformer Armada and Animated shows were better than the movies.flamepanther wrote:That's just fans for you. I like how a lot of TransFormers fans complain that the robots in the Michael Bay movies are unrecognizable as Transformers because of stylistic differences in how the vehicle parts are broken up--yet many of these same people had no problem with the Transformers in Beast Wars being six-foot-tall and covered in synthetic meat. It's like any time theres a New Change, any and all Old Change becomes the new established and accepted history, despite any previous controversy it might have engendered.
I think the overuse of the human characters was largely a budget saving measure. It irritated me, but didn't ruin the movies for me. It's not like it's totally unprecedented or anything. Even the original comics occasionally got too caught up with human drama--Buster Witwicky and his problems, G. B. Blackrock, Circuitbreaker and the Neo Knights, the so-called" Robot Master," all of the stupid Nebulans... Still, I would have been less irritated by all focus on the military in Bay's movies if it had been a tie-in to G.I. Joe. Huge missed opportunity there.

I will admit that in my younger days I was a little bit TOO into Sonic and read the comics for a number of years. That being said -- the older comics, and the Knuckles ones, are actually pretty cool I think. Only around the time they came out with Sonic Adventure and what not did the comic start to get kind of...hrm...furry-esque and insipid. I think it mostly had to do with me growing up and out of Sonic. But yeah...the stuff on DeviantART and everything is really irritating to me. I'm content playing through the first four Genesis games nowadays.
Oh and Sonic CD, of course.

For what its worth, the comics have become quite good in recent years.

Re: The worst fanbases
Another odd thing I've noticed with the furry segment of the Sonic fanbase is that an enormous subsection of them are also sexually attracted to morbidly obese renderings of the characters as well. Like, we're not talking BBW (an acronym meaning "big, beautiful women" for those not aware) here, we're talking furry characters with dire weight issues, rocketing past the "unhealthy" line and clear into "tragic" territory. Here's a safe-for-work example:

There's a TON of this kind of stuff out there, much of it explicitly sexual in nature. While I can't say I understand the whole furry thing, I'm understanding of it when it comes to the Sonic fanbase. After all, these are guys who were able to see Amy Rose's panties when she jumped and played around with Rouge's breast physics at an age where looking at cantaloupes or peaches at just the right angle could trigger a sexual response from many of us.
But why would outrageously fat renderings of Sonic characters be a relatively mainstream segment of their fandom? Is it some kind of self-depreciating way of linking themselves with Dr. Robotnik? Like, it makes them feel "bad" to imagine themselves having the same kinds of fetishes the bad guy in Sonic might be into? Clearly I've put way too much thought into this, but it really is baffling to me.

Yes, you've put way too much thought into it.Original_Name wrote:Clearly I've put way too much thought into this, but it really is baffling to me.
A fetish is loosely defined as " an object of irrational reverence or obsessive devotion". You know, some folks have a foot fetish, others have a fart fetish -- still others have an obesity fetish. One of the weirdest parts about the sexual side of furry fandom is that the vast majority of those fetishes are unable to be lived out in real life. Like the picture you posted. Maybe that's part of the allure.
All in all, it's not very complicated. Sometimes it takes awfully weird things to turn some people's cranks, and that's just the way it is.

Haha, definitely. It may also be that many of the other fetishes aren't "clean" enough to be randomly stumbled upon on while perusing DeviantArt. That said, the sheer quantity of the stuff floating around is just immense. I wouldn't imagine there could possibly be just as many articles of foot or hairy-armpit or choking or old-people eroticism in the Sonic community as there is for fat (and by extension inflation/cannibalism) fetishism.irixith wrote:Yes, you've put way too much thought into it.Original_Name wrote:Clearly I've put way too much thought into this, but it really is baffling to me.
