@ Everyone else: The deal applies for everyone who's a power up member, but the trade values lessen respectively with each older iteration of the system (Originals don't count I believe as they never sell).

@ Lodestar:.....Wut?
People aren't going to buy a new console to sell it towards another, also the trade in values seem quite fair. In the real world outside of GS' trade promotion you'd be damn lucky to even get $5-20 for a DS Phat or Lite and only $50-70ish for a DSi or DSi-XL (and that's pushing it in some respect). Aside from bundle ebay/CL sales and the like these handhelds are generally worthless int the public view. The DS has achieved such a large market penetration that getting lots of cash for a unit in a personal transaction is pretty tough. It'll sell for more in a store, but nobody who's looking to resell an item ever paid fair market value.

I'm sure Originals don't count. That's what I have, and it never counts for jack-squat at Gamestop.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:@ Lodestar:.....Wut?People aren't going to buy a new console to sell it towards another, also the trade in values seem quite fair. Re: $99 3DS
Don't know how you reached that conclusion, I think you misread. I was just giving the value of new units as a reference point. Of course, if they're used, it might seem like a better deal--but--how much someone spent on a handheld counts directly affects the value of this deal. Doesn't matter what your DS is worth in its used state, if you bought a DS for full price and this deal came along some time later, you aren't getting your money's worth at all. The unit depreciated in value, but the buyer still spent over a hundred dollars on it when it was new. If you look at this deal purely based on what your DS is worth in the used goods market, then you're hurting your wallet more than you know - it's fallacious to only look at this deal strictly in terms of what the DS is worth. Maybe DSs aren't worth as much after the box has been opened, but they've maintained their retail value over the years because Nintendo still finds it suitable to sell them at those prices.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:@ Lodestar:.....Wut?People aren't going to buy a new console to sell it towards another, also the trade in values seem quite fair. If you bought your DS used for a cheap price like some of the figures you mentioned, then this is probably a great thing to do if you just want to play 3DS games... but it's a gamble any way you look at it, the 3DS has a weak library so far and the DS backwards-compatibility makes DS games look worse.
Also, I see DSi XLs selling for about 100-120 (even used) on eBay, so you can imagine how this isn't an ideal trade-in for everyone.
Re: $99 3DS
For some clarification on the deal, it applies only to the DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL. No originals.

Re: $99 3DS
I got the email yesterday, and it said originals count. But it only gets you $40 toward a 3DS. Lites get you $50, DSi's get $60, and DSi XL's get $70.Lodestar wrote:For some clarification on the deal, it applies only to the DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL. No originals.

Re: $99 3DS
Not a bad deal if one wants to change to a 3DS while getting rid of an older DS. Fifty bucks is not much though, maybe keep the older DSLite as a spare portable GBA. I'm still waiting for the DSLite to drop to fifty bucks clearanced new. I prefer this DS for non firmware upgrade issues.
On a side note, I would never buy a used battery powered system without taking into account the cost of a replacement battery. Who knows what condition the battery is in, the remaining service life? PSP, GBA or DS and especially if a used laptop with an expensive to replace proprietary battery.

I'd rather wait for prices to drop and get a DSi or DSi XL. But that's just me. I'm holding off on the 3DS for a little bit.

Hmm, I guess NeoGAF isn't too reliable a news source.

Re: $99 3DS
This is a good point also because while you can use an option on the 3DS to run DS games in their native resolution - as noted here - the screen then is slightly smaller than the previous DS outputs . I don't have DS experience so it probably wouldn't bother me as much as others.CRTGAMER wrote:Not a bad deal if one wants to change to a 3DS while getting rid of an older DS. The battery is a good point as well. We need to keep our eyes out for when these are clearanced.
