animated (read: children's) movies i have cried in:

Finding Nemo
- i have a 5 year old son, and we watched this movie a lot before he was born and the first few years of his life. the absolute hardest part for me is the part where nigel the seagull comes back and is telling nemo in the fishtank about how his father has been battling the entire ocean just to find him. just watch it. it's beautiful.

Toy Story 3
- the ending totally fucking killed me. the inevitability of growing older, and the subsequent realizations of mortality, come with incredibly harsh emotions. the part at the end when the little girl reaches for Woody and Andy hesitates and jerks him away from her was right in line with those realizations and our unwillingness sometimes to give up on our childhood. deep shit.

The Iron Giant
- just great character development. "superman..."

Wall-E
- there is almost no dialogue in this movie, but i felt more connected to the characters of wall-e and eve than i have in most movies i've seen. for being robots they are incredibly human, and their relationship together is charming and touching. the ending is rough.


Pokemon: The First Movie
- this one is the worst for me. i usually tear up when i think about it. the part at the end, when ash is stone, and pikachu is trying as hard as he can to bring him back to life, but just can't do it. the concept of inevitable failure is something that's almost non-existent in children's movies. seeing a character trying to revive their dead best friend, in all its futility, and ultimately realizing that sometimes your best just isn't good enough is a very heavy concept for anyone to come to terms with, let alone one for a film aimed at children. ash is such a pure and good character with a lot of charisma and vulnerability, so seeing him get blasted like that is pretty rough too.

No spoilers, just a list of movies that have succeeded in making me tear up just a tad. Nothing has ever made me actually start bawling, but I have found my eyes well up a bit from time to time despite my every manly effort to stop it

Asif Kapadia's The Warrior - It's not exactly a sad movie, but it is poignant
The Wrestler - Well, I don't need to say anything with all the acclaim it has gotten
The Rurouni Kenshin prequel OVA - Heart wrenching tale that sheds a completely different light on the character
House of Flying Daggers - It's an artsy fartsy movie that's big on style, but it has genuine emotion as well and a good story.
Grave of the Fireflies - I swore to never watch this movie again. It's hard to watch
Seven Samurai

These are a few I'm embarrassed to admit:
Tenchi Forever
Terminator 2 - You guys know which scene it was. The first time I saw it it got to me
A few Disney movies like Hercules, Hunchback and probably The Lion King

I'll occasionally tear up a bit at a romcom if it's GOOD. I know good romcoms are a rare thing, but I like a good love story when it's done right. There are a few decent ones I've seen that are fantasy oriented like Stardust and Enchanted. Of course, Princess Bride is great but it never made me shed a tear.

Interestingly enough, this topic brought more tv shows to mind than movies

The last movie I can think of that I watched and shed some tears was Bridge to Terabithia. I read the book as a child and it resonated heavily with me. I'm not sure if the movie put the lump in my chest so much as it was me remembering the book.

Cried in laughter yes. Cried in sadness no. Guess I'm just heartless.

That happened to me when Borat in theaters, I was not the only one. Pure genius comedy. There are other films like that made me cry tears of laughter like "I sell the dead".

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Theres a few spots in that movie that make me tear up. Spoilers: When Joel and Clementine meet for the first time towards the end of the movie. When they're sitting at the beach eating together, and Clementine says "this is it Joel, it's going to be gone soon. What do we do?" and Joel's reply "enjoy it" makes me cry like a bitch. Also, a few scenes later when the house is crumbling. The entire exchange that Clem and Joel have makes my heart wrench

Yeah, I love that movie. Personal all time favorite.

Also, I watched Adaptation for the first time in about a year today. The ending of that made me tear up a little too. Not nearly as much though. What can I say, Charlie Kaufman is amazing.

Great movie, and AnnaSophia was incredible in it. She's going to grow into a beautiful woman and a Hollywood star.
