I'm looking into buying a Turbo CD add-on. I know that the Turbo CD dock adds RGB out like a TurboBooster, but does the CD unit also allow you to save on system memory like the TurboBooster Plus?

Well I don't believe TurboBooster adds RGB. It wouldn't have been much use with how few European owners the TurboGrafx family had.

Indeed. Turbo Booster gave you composite and stereo, as opposed to just RF.

It should. Just be careful in weighing your options. Unless you have some pressing need that requires specifically a USA model CD drive unit, it's difficult to recommend. People haven't yet quite grasped how scarce they're becoming to obtain separate from the base console.

The Turbo-CD 100% does give you the ability to save games and use composite AV out. Perhaps you confused "composite" for "RGB"? Composite is the standard red, white and yellow AV cables.

Yes, it is true that the US Turbo-CD units are hard to find. On top of that, they are prone to failure. There is a gear inside that breaks fairly easily just with time/use. You CAN use the original Japanese CD-unit on a US Turbo CD docking unit (replacing a broken black US CD-unit for a working Japanese white one), as they are more common to find than the US one.

The easier way to go the CD route is to buy a Japanese Duo. The CD games are all region free. If you want AV out of your TG-16, buying a Turbo booster or modding it for AV might be a much cheaper route.


I know some of this post is just a repeat of information, but hopefully it answers your questions and gives you a little extra info. The TG-16/PC Engine can be a confusing system at first.

Guess that settles it. I was looking into the TurboCD because I wanted to avoid the sound problems that are so common with the TurboDuo. I believe it's been discussed before, but the conclusion stands that a region modded PC-Engine Duo would be the best hardware option.

One last question - which version of the Duo is best out of the Duo, Duo R, and Duo RX? I can't seem to get a definitive answer regarding the comparative reliability of the three.

Reliability isn't so much the issue, more that they're so unlikely to find standalone. Broken or not. At any price. These drives are almost always bundled with a TurboGrafx when posted up for sale.
