Re: Best comic book based retro games?
There was a Genesis game based on the first Tim Burton movie that was good for its time, but not quite so impressive now
Also, I never played Batman Returns on the Sega CD, but I heard it had some pretty awesome driving sequences. I think there was also another Batman game on the Sega CD that had footage from the animated series that never made it into an actual tv episode

I ended up grabbed X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse at a local joint and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The music is actually great (sounds like stuff pulled right from Mega Man X) and it's just an all around fun game.
Thanks guys, any other recommendations? I suppose it doesn't have to be a retro game, either, if there are some good modern comic book games that went under the radar. I'm familiar with all the Spider-Man ones as that's my favorite mainstream comic series and the modern Spider-Man games are generally quality ones.

Well, there is the Red Star. It is based on a comic book series. However, it's a pure action title and doesn't really focus on story at all. It does take place within the comic's universe however. It plays like a cross between 2d shmups and beat'em ups. The closest thing I could compare it too would be Cannon Spike. You'll be dropping a melee combo on someone one moment, and going through bullet hell the next. I absolutely loved that game. It is marvelously designed and really challenging without ever feeling cheap
BurningDoom had some great suggestions in a previous post that I can vouch for like X-Men Legends 1 & 2, both Marvel Ultimate Alliance games, Batman: Arkham Asylum, X-Men Origins Wolverine, The Incredibl Hulk Ultimate Destruction and Spider-Man on the original Playstation
Also, if you ever play X-Men Legends 2, go to gamefaqs. There's a glitch in the game that makes Nightcrawler every bit the badass that he is in the opening scene of the X2:X-Men United movie. You need to know where to put your upgrade points to exploit the glitch though, but it makes him so damn fun to play as. You be teleporting all over the screen laying waste to everything that breathes and rarely will anyone ever lay a hand on you. The gltich makes him one of the game's top tier characters
Also, while Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a tv show it is now a comic book franchise and the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the Xbox was a decent little beat'em up

I am not a fan of comics, but I love Batman Returns for SNES. Batman for TurboGrafx is horrible!

Re: Best comic book based retro games?
I think the Batman PC Engine game is fun.
Batman in general has been treated far better than most comic book characters in video games. The 3 games on the NES were great and unbelievably hard. Batman Returns on the SNES is good too, though I have more preference to its NES counterpart. The Adventures of Batman and Robin is completely overlooked on the SNES. It's a very, very hard beat 'em up with some fun elements in there like the grappling gun being used.
The best Xmen game by far is going to be the arcade game and that's solely based on my nostalgia for both arcades and playing that game with 5 other strangers.
There's a GREAT Punisher beat 'em up from the arcades that I can't recall the name of.

Re: Best comic book based retro games?
Ultimate Spiderman on PS2/GCN/XBox is a slight gem of a game. It replicates Spiderman 2's sandbox on smaller scale and with some pretty ageless cel-shaded graphics. It can get a woeful beast on occasion though, the camera being like a drunk midge with its arse on fire.
