Best comic book based retro games?

Post by brunoafh »

There's almost certainly a thread for this... but I couldn't find one. I know about all the classic comic games like Maximum Carnage, The Punisher, Separation Anxiety, Clone Wars, and some others, but I was wondering about some other 8-bit and 16-bit comic games that may have went under my radar.

They don't have to be great games or anything, I was just looking to learn about some random games I'm missing out on and why they might be worth a go. Suggestions?

On the SNES Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems and X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse stand out to me as quality Marvel games, though if you're willing to play games a lot of folks consider garbage, there's always Arcade's Revenge and the terrible Captain America and the Avengers port. There's also The Incredible Hulk, but I'm not a big fan of it. And I've never played Wolverine: Adamantium Rage.

DC offered up the beat 'em up Death and Return of Superman as well as Blizzard's fighting game Justice League Task Force...whether they're any good is up to you. Batman Returns is generally considered better than Batman Forever.

As for other comics, Spawn's enjoyable but not easy. RoboCop Vs. the Terminator is a beast, and I found Alien Vs. Predator to be sort of meh. Judge Dredd's not great either. I believe Casper is based on the movie, so take that as you will. I've never played The Mask. The Tick was terrible.

As far as Euro comics are concerned, I couldn't say as I haven't tried the games based on Lucky Luke, Tintin, Asterix, etc. I assume you're leaving Japanese comics out of this too.

Funny you mention Arcade's Revenge, I'm playing it as I type this. The music is awesome. I don't mind suggestions that are generally considered "bad games", I can find enjoyment in nearly any game I play. I'll look into some of the games you mentioned for sure.

Euro comic suggestions are welcomed, Japanese comics not so much as I already know about all the manga games I can handle.

Well, on the NES there's always Silver Surfer. Have fun with that one, it's brutal. And then there is Wolverine, Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six, and The Uncanny X-Men from LJN. Captain America and the Avengers is very different from what I hear on the NES. You already mentioned The Punisher.

The Game Boy port of Batman: Return of the Joker was great, but I've not tried the NES port. There's also titles like Superman, Batman, and Swamp Thing. The Batman Returns port is apparently similar to Double Dragon.

Dick Tracy had a game. So did Popeye. And Spy Vs. Spy. But you must play Little Nemo: The Dream Master. And don't forget the multitude of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. Oh, and Snoopy had a sports game.

Again, I don't know anything about the games based on European comics.

I'm a HUGE comic book geek, so I have played A LOT of comic book based games. In my experience, these were the best:

-Batman: The Video Game (NES) - Great side-scrolling beat-em that is pretty reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden in the sense that you have dark art-style, cutscenes between levels, brutal difficulties, a limited number of projectile attacks in addition to your infinite melee attack, and the oh-so fun ability to wall-jump. And the soundtrack is fan-freaking-tastic! It loosely follows the plot of the first Tim Burton Batman movie that stars Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as The Joker.

-Batman: Arkham Asylum (XBox 360/PS3) - The only good Batman game since the NES game, lol. This game captured the comic book Batman PERFECTLY. He's skilled, determined, very shadowy and sneaky, and retains "The World's Greatest Detective" about him in this very dark and stylish take on the Dark Knight. I had a blast going up against The Joker & Harlequinn and their army of Arkham Asylum inmates. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE!

-The Death & Return of Superman (SNES/Genesis) - A great beat-em up and possibly the ONLY good Superman video game not counting the never-ported arcade game. This game follows the comic storyline of The Death of Superman and the connected Reign of the Supermen storyline from the early 90s. You get to play as all 4 imposter Supermen as well as the real Man of Steel in this bad boy as well as fight Doomsday, the killer of Superman.

-The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (PS2/XBox/Gamecube)- The sub-titles says it all "Ultimate Destruction". This game is a ton of fun because of the havoc and chaos you get to cause all around you as The Hulk, which is the way you've always imagined an Incredible Hulk game to be. Angry? This is the game to work out your emotions with.

-Justice League: Heroes (PS2/XBox/Gamecube) - DC Comics' answer to Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Not as long and not as many characters to choose from. But still, this is a very fun game. And the one area it is better than Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is the graphics. The characters are larger and more detailed in this game. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointments is that the game is too short, and the unlockable characters are nothing more than skins for already existing characters. But still, a lot of fun for DC Comics fans and action-RPG fans that like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance style gameplay.

Marvel Super-Heroes (Saturn/PS1/Arcade) - Great 2D fighting game made by Capcom and in the same style as the Street Fighter games of the same era. Starring Marvel Comics characters like Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine, and others. Pretty impressive 2D graphics for the time.

-Marvel Super-Heroes: War of the Gems (SNES) - This one is a little harder to find than others on the list, but it's not terribly expensive or anything. Around $20-$50 depending on condition and whats included and what-not. But it's a ton of fun for comic fans as it loosely follows the Infinity War storyline from the early 90s from Marvel Comics (the 2nd in the "Infinity Trilogy" of storylines). What's great is that it's a side-scrolling beat-em up, but it also implements fighting-game type moves into your moveset making it much more interesting. It also has a map menu that allows you to play levels in the order you want instead of completely linear.

-Marvel vs. Capcom (Arcade/Dreamcast) - The pinnacle of the 2D Marvel fighting games, IMO. This was an awesome game with a ton of fighters to choose from on both the Marvel and Capcom sides. Killer 2D graphics, still to this day. And great controls make this my favorite fighting game of all-time. And yes, I like this one better than Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The special-hyper moves just got out of control in MvC2, IMO. Oh, and the Dreamcast port is one of the best arcade ports ever.

-Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 (PS2/XBox/XBox 360) - Similar to X-Men Legends in the sense that it's a hack-n-slash like action-RPG where you control a team of 4 characters. But these games are better than X-Men Legends in every area: Better graphics, better storylines, better characters, more abilities & items, more areas to explore, and lots of tie-ins to the comic universe. If you're a Marvel Comics fan, the get this game.

-Maximum Carnage (SNES/Genesis)- One of my favorite beat-em ups of all-time. You play as Spider-Man and as Venom as the levels dictate. You fight a plethora of Super-Villains in a storyline that follows the famous Maximum Carnage storyline that ran through all the Spider-Man comic titles in the early 90s.

-Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (XBox 360/PS3) - Not the best Mortal Kombat game ever, but not a bad one either. Pretty fun, and it's great to play as your favorite DC Comic book super-heroes, since there's not a whole lot of good DC Comics video games. Worth it for the bargain price it goes for.

-The Punisher (NES) - A very early on-rails shooter. But back then, it was very innovative and fun to play. I haven't played it since then, so I'm not sure how well it's aged.

-The Punisher (Arcade/Genesis) - Great beat-em that combines the great beat-em action of Final Fight with the weapon fest of the Double Dragon games. Great 2D graphics for it's time to boot.

-Separation Anxiety (SNES/Genesis) - Very similar in gameplay and art-style to Maximum Carnage. Heck, the final villain is even Carnage like in Maximum Carnage. But this is not a bad thing at all, and the difficulty is amped-down a bit in this one.

-Spider-Man (Atari 2600) - This is the only decent comic book based game on the system that I know of, and like a lot of Atari 2600 games, it's not a masterpiece either. But it's playable and fun for a little bit. STAY AWAY FROM SUPERMAN FOR ATARI 2600!

-Spider-Man (Master System/Genesis/Sega CD/Game Gear) - Not as good as Maximum Carnage or Separation Anxiety, but it came out a few years before them, too. This game is more like an upgrade from Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six and is pretty fun for an action-platformer.

-Spider-Man: The Arcade Game (Arcade) - I have only played this a few times. But I had a blast when I did. It's a 4-player beat-em up only released for Arcade and you can play as Spider-Man of course as well as Hawkeye and a few others that I can't remember. Great graphics for the time I remember, and lots of comic villains including Venom, which at the time was a brand-spanking new character so it was awesome to see!

-Spider-Man (PS1/N64/Dreamcast) - This first Spider-Man game in 3D, and they did a dang good job translating him into 3D. Once I played the game it was like "This is the way a Spider-Man game should have always been." And after this game, the series just got better. This game is based on the comics, no story in particular though. You web-sling around, beat-up henchmen, and fight a variety of super-villains from the comics. Venom appears a bit in this one.

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro (PS1) - The sequel to the above Spider-Man game but his time a PS1 exclusive. More of the same with a little more polished graphics. But that "same" is good stuff, so being more of the same is not a bad thing at all.

-Spider-Man: The Movie (XBox/PS2/Gamecube)- Oh my gosh, I LOVE this game. It's not open-world like Spider-Man 2, it has linear levels (but the levels are somewhat open, allowing for web-maneuvering). But still, those well-designed levels and the oh-so-fun web-slinging mechanics make this game a blast to play. The story loosely follows the story of the movie, with a lot more added in including plenty of super-villains. And it has sooooo much stuff to unlock, plenty to satisfy the hungriest Spider-Man fan. Best of all: You can play as Green Goblin, powers plus Goblin Glider and all not just a skin, once you beat the game!

-Spider-Man 2 (XBox/PS2/Gamecube) - The sequel to Spider-Man: The Movie. This time loosely following the plot of the 2nd movie. This time the game plays in an entirely open-world sandbox world of the movie version of New York City, activating events and battles as you come across them. What sets this game apart as fun is the web-slinging mechanics which have been revamped a bit to fit this open-world feel of the game. It's a ton of fun and great stress-relief to just web-sling around New York.

-Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (NES/Master System/Game Gear) - Pretty fun side-scrolling beat-em up that implements Spidey's web and wall-crawling abilities and has plenty of Spider-Man's rogue's gallery in it. It loosely follows the 90s comic storyline of the same name.

-Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (XBox 360) - The game plays sort of similar to Spider-Man 2 in the way that it's an open-world sandbox game set in New York City again. But this game has a lot more action, super-powered villains, and even a lot of appearances by other Marvel Comics heroes from other comics including The Fantastic Four, Avengers, Wolverine, and others. It has a Symbiote (Venom & Carnage) centric storyline, so it's great for fans of the 90s Spider-Man like myself.

-Superman: The Arcade Game (Arcade) - Great beat-em arcade game with impressive graphics for the late 80s that followed the comic books. It had great co-op play, allowing the 2nd player to play as the Red Superman from the famous Silver Age story. It had both beat-em up and shoot-em up levels.

-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) - There's a lot of hate out there for this game, but I personally loved it. It is brutally difficult as the game goes on, hell, I still haven't beat it. But the levels you can get through are fun. A combination of side-scrolling beat-em up and platforming. You can change which Turtle you play as on the fly, and there's a sort-of open-world for the time map where you travel from level-to-level.

-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game (Arcade/NES) - A great beat-em up game that influenced an entire generation of gamers. Your basic beat-em up, but great graphics and sound for it's day, great co-op gameplay, and Konami did a great job translating the cartoon into a video game.

-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project (NES) - NES sequel to the port of the above TMNT game. Better graphics than it's predecessor and longer game.

-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (SNES) - The best of the original series of TMNT games. Again made by Konami and again a beat-em up. But this one definetly had the best graphics and sound, and it implemented new special moves for the Turtles.

-X-Men: The Arcade Game (Arcade/XBox Live Arcade) - Great 4-player beat-up starring none other than The X-Men. The X-Men's first good game. Made by Konami and VERY similar to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade Game.

-X-Men (Sega Genesis) - Other than Sonic the Hedgehog, this is the game that really made me take notice of the Sega Genesis and made me REALLY want one. This game combines side-scrolling platforming, beat-em up, and even a little bit of puzzle together into a great X-Men experience.

-X-Men 2: The Clone Wars (Sega Genesis) - The better of the two Genesis X-Men exclusives. This one is more of a straight beat-em up game. Fantastic graphics for the Sega Genesis, and very true to the X-Men comics of the time (early 90s). Unique abilities for each character and being able to play as multiple characters makes this a must-have for the Genesis.

-X-Men: Children of the Atom (Sega Saturn/PS1/Arcade) - The first Marvel fighting game, made by Capcom the masters of 2D fighters. This is the game that spawned Marvel Super-Heroes and the Marvel vs. Capcom series. If you've played the Street Fighter series, then you know how this plays only this game stars X-Men heroes and villains. Much closer to the arcade than the 16-bit Street Fighter games, though.

-X-Men Legends 1 & 2 (XBox/PS2/Gamecube) - Great action-RPG games in the same vein as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. But instead of controlling one character, you get to control a team of 4 characters each with their own unique abilities and skills.

-X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse (SNES) - Okay, I know I said Maximum Carnage was my favorite beat-em up, but I lied, this is. X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse is a masterpiece of 2D beat-em up proportions. Awesome graphics, awesome sound, great sprite animations, spot on with the character designs and movies, and I love the fighting moves themselves as they are fighting-game style moves and each character has their own unique set of abilities. My only complaint is that the game is so freaking short.

-X-Men: Origins: Wolverine (XBox 360/PS3/Wii) - This game plays similar to other 3D beat-em ups. Based on the movie of the same name. What sets this game apart, though, is the pure brutality and gore of it. It's just so satisfying to rip enemies into little red ribbons in this game. And Wolverine himself takes real-time damage, damage that causes wounds on his body that you can see, and then you watch them heal. It's pretty cool.

Comix Zone for the Genesis. Yes, it's not based on a comic book, but it is THE best 16-bit comic book game there is

Since Batman the Animated Series was based on Batman comics, I have to mention the adventures of Batman and Robin on the SNES as the best 2d Batman game I've played. It copies the animated series down to the last detail. Not to be confused with the Genesis game, which is cool but really had nothing at all to do with Batman beyond the game's title

I have a soft spot for the real obvious Batman Returns on the SNES. Played that one to death back in the day.

There were a couple good Batman games in the 8-bit and 16-bit days. It's irritated me for years hearing people say there were never any good Batman games and the best one of them all IMO-The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the SNES-most people either didn't know about or confused with the good, but inferior Genesis version

Many people still think Arkham Asylum is the first good Batman game, mostly people who just say that because it's what most people say and have never actually done the research for themselves

I gotta say, I have to agree with this. Batman: Return of the Joker for Game Boy was actually the first comic book game I ever owned, and I loved every minute of it. Unfortunately I believe when folks think back, they remember Batman Forever, which really wasn't up to par with the rest in my opinion.

Totally with you guys. I have fond memories of the first two Batman games on the NES, Batman Returns on the SNES was awesome, Batman & Robin I did play but can't quite remember much of it...

Batman Forever is UTTER garbage though, yeah.
