Really I'd bet they didn't think it far enough through and just used their normal card.

Thats pretty crazy a high res scan of the barcode is all you need to fool the machine.

Ah, right, I forgot about those prepaid cards. Well in that case, it is a nice little scam. Though really, is it worth the effort to steal a disc only copy of a game? And a used one at that.

Well, it only cost the guy 2 bucks and some ink, plus the time to cut out the copy. The whole process probably took 10 minutes.

If he was smart enough to use a prepaid card, then he got a new game for damn near free.

And really, if he was willing to swipe a rental copy like this, I doubt he really cares if its used and lacking a box. Considering the pay off, I'd say it is indeed worth the effort. It isn't a collector mentality that makes someone do something like this you know?

Guy's a thieving prick for doing it though.

Think about it like this: He goes through the trouble for a used disc, yes. But he has shown that he can do decent repros. He can just repro up case art and throw it in a new case. So why go through all this trouble? Well, how much does Gamestop or Bestbuy give for used games?

When I was a store manager anyone who brought in a MINT game was immediately subject to suspicion of being in possession of a stolen game. However is someone brought in a few games and had only minor wear maybe a missing manual, wasnt at all obvious.

If it was a stolen credit card, why would they have returned anything? I think it's just a case of stupidity.

That's what I'm saying, I feel like I'm missing something. It just doesn't make sense to me. It only makes sense to return a scan of the disc so YOUR credit card doesn't get charged for it. Unless the guy stole a credit card but felt bad about it. Ripping some one off for a $1 rental isn't as bad as full price. What a kind thief!

So today I went to a Redbox machine for the very first time to rent Dirt 3 for PS3.
It popped out of the machine and I took it back to my car. When I got back to my car to
check the disc for scratches I realized there was no disc at all! Somebody scanned the disc and put a high res printout in the game case. I couldn't believe it! I called Redbox right away and told them what happened.They refunded my 2 bucks back to my card
and they told me to put the 'game' back in the machine.

Hopefully Redbox asked you the location to retrieve the printed disc right away. I would love to read the news story when they catch the stupid bastard thru the credit card transaction.

When I told them my info they knew right away which machine it was. Yeah, I hope they follow through with their investigation.

I know that many POS kiosks do not accept prepaid cards for this reason. I remember when someone tried to use a prepaid card while I was at a gas station and was told that it would only go through if they had at least $60 on the card.

Also, when using a card, it asks for the zip code associated with the billing address, so unless the person knew where it was stolen from, there was no guarantee they would get it right.
