I Guess People Are Stealing Games from Redbox...

Post by hashiriya1 »

I have Netflix so I never bothered renting movies from Redbox or Blockbuster Express but
when games became available at Redbox I thought I would give it a shot because it seems
a good way to demo a full game for a day.

So today I went to a Redbox machine for the very first time to rent Dirt 3 for PS3.
It popped out of the machine and I took it back to my car. When I got back to my car to
check the disc for scratches I realized there was no disc at all! Somebody scanned the disc
and put a high res printout in the game case. I couldn't believe it! I called Redbox right away
and told them what happened. They refunded my 2 bucks back to my card
and they told me to put the 'game' back in the machine.

Redbox needs a new system of detecting their discs if the machine can be fooled
this easily. If somebody stole the game I am sure they can trace back to who did it,
and if that person used a stolen credit card or a prepaid credit card, they shouldn't
have bothered returning it.

Anyway, I thought I would tell you guys that if you rent a game from Redbox, check the
disc before you leave! This is just purely ghetto.

Jesus, it'd be less effort just to buy the game in the first place.

I see Redbox machines at least once per week, and have never seen one that had game rentals. Had no idea they did that till you made this topic.

Well I'm pretty sure they JUST started trying this out pretty recently.

That sucks though.

Clever. WRONG, but clever.

Not very clever. Am I missing something? Can't Redbox just see who ever was the last person to rent that game was, then charge their credit card for it? I mean, you need a credit card to rent a movie/game from those machines right? Unless it was a stolen credit card, then I guess it wouldn't matter.

You require a credit/debit card but who knows, maybe it's a prepaid credit card (They do exist)

Also, here in Mexico we just got a shitty equivalent to RedBox that uses cash and very outdated films. I don't think it's going to last

Ah, right, I forgot about those prepaid cards. Well in that case, it is a nice little scam. Though really, is it worth the effort to steal a disc only copy of a game? And a used one at that.
