Probably another reason why modern Sonic has never done much for me at all personally, the art direction went downhill and hard. Sonic in modern settings? What the hell. :x
If you haven't yet, check out Sonic Colors. It pushed a lot of fanboy buttons for me that no other Sonic game has done for years. And I say that having enjoyed all of them, even the worst ones.

I've heard a lot of good things about Colors, so that is one (outside of Generations!) that I will probably have to check out sometime.

I was honestly impressed by the Metal Gear 2 (for MSX) intro, the first time I played it, which was in early 2009. Also, found Deus Ex: Invisible War's physics engine impressive in '08.

"Outdated" relative to their time period, or outdated relative to now?
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

Some games will kinda "blow me away" when I think that they look/sound good for their time. A few that come to mind are the transition from FF7 to FF8, because the way the characters looks was a vast improvement IMO. Also some games art styles like Yoshi's Island and Okami just look awesome even today. And some elements like in Resident Evil the mirrors work, which I thought was cool.

Well, obviously, here's the Killer Whale in Sonic Adventure. Alternatively, there's Lucas' conversation with Hinawa after the battle with Fassad, or Ryu's ending in SFII: CE, as I was playing on an MD emu and the buttons were all over the shop (DS).

That reminds me, I found the truck scene in the first level of Sonic Adventure 2 to be pretty darn amazing in 2007. It's still kinda cool.

I KNOW! Ironically, I find HD Gen to be so profoundly uninspiring, it's ridiculous. I actively wait for that title to blow my pants off. I mean, I saw the killer whale sequence when I was 22, so it's not a nostalgia bias.
